i have a friend that gave me his switcher to try to fix it is a ps3 runs great until it goes across a switch then it stops immediately he bought it on eBay and doesn't have the receipt for it any more is there a capacitor that I could install og should I give it back to him and let him send it to MTH?

Actually, there's nothing wrong with it, it's running as designed. That is the most common complaint with those.
I have a couple short MTH switchers (no 44's), that experience the same issues over switches. Make sure the rollers are cleaned and lubricated and that the wheels are clean also.
There is a lengthy thread on this topic.
The MTH 44 tonners have a short distance between pickup rollers, the pickup rollers’ contact width is narrow and the engine has trouble maintaining ground contact with the outside rails. Make sure that BOTH outside rails are grounded.
I found that removing the traction tires from the front truck substantially eliminated my problem without substantially reducing pulling power.
Good luck with this. It is a great engine once you figure out how to tune it.
Interesting idea on the traction tires, that might be worth a look. I'm still wanting to upgrade the caps in mine, just haven't gotten around to it.
