Took this off the shelf for maintenance and running today. I get the railsounds, horn and bell okay, the headlight works but it does not go forward or reverse. When power is applied, it buzzes loudly.
Any ideas to try before it goes in for repair at the authorized shop?

Check to make sure the reverse unit isn't in the locked position.
I purchase my unit "used". it looks brand new, but it will not make it around the track without a derailment. Anyone else have this problem?
The 6-18034 Santa Fe Mikado was based on the Berkshire design that goes back to the mid-1940's, so the bugs were long-ago worked out.
You'll need to be more specific -- which part derailed? under what conditions? which track system? -- before anyone will be able to lend much insight. Photos will also help.
