A few years old Lionel 80 watt transformer stuck buttons

Hello, I have an 80 transformer that the direction button and the bell button are stuck down and won't release. What to do?

I have successfully disassembled these and filed the plastic buttons where they meet the circuit board switches to restore the tactile "click" action and function. Why they would not work this far down the road is a mystery, but if they got oil on them, it's possible they were subject to a hydrocarbon swelling.
