I had been dabbling in HO traction, but then bought this old Ken Kidder Illinois Terminal lightweight interurban with Wagner trucks, both new in their original boxes. Spent an enjoyable afternoon cutting the opening in the cars wood floor, blackening the side frames and installing the trucks. Next up is headlight castings and a basic interior before painting the car. Really like the ease of working in this scale, but also being able to run them in my tiny room I have for a layout. Something I have been unable to do with 2 rail in any other fashion that I enjoyed like a switching layout. I also have a Labelle kit on the way, one of the Lake Shore wood coaches. I purchased a later issue set of Wagner Baldwin trucks for it, they have a can motor instead of the open frame in the IT car. The Wagner trucks were hand engraved by the man himself way back in 1965, and have sat unused for all these decades. I did replace the magnet on the motor and clean out the rock hard grease from the worm and gear. This could be the nail in the coffin for my HO traction mini layout. Have to see how well it runs once I get some wire up, these trucks are not insulated, so its overhead wire operation only so that is how the car is wired. My other set of Wagner trucks are insulated, so they can be run off 2 rail track power, but thats not how that car will be set up once the kit arrives from Labelle and I build it this coming winter. Next up I want to get a Ken Kidder 2 truck Birney and put Q car trucks in it unless I find a correct set of Wagner trucks for it.

Nice...I remember seeing an O scale traction layout at the first major train show I attended:1973 MRIA convention. For whatever reason, those big, yet almost silent cars made a big impression. Yours looks like a fun project; please keep us posted. 🙂

Curious as to how this was accomplished. Was a template provided to guide the size and shape of the floor opening?
I've wanted to one day try one of these, but re-engineer it for 3-rail use, as it's unlikely I'll ever have the room to establish a dedicated traction layout on top of what I have already.

Older Wagner drive with open exposed gears....looks like good fun! Insulated Wagner drives are scarce! I look for them but rarely find any.
I think more of the later runs were insulated. The one I got off ebay has insulated wheels on one side and a chinese can motor to the gear box. Seen a few of these with this less expensive motor, seem to run well. But yes, the older Wagners could be ordered either way but most are not insulated. The hole in the floor is up to the modeler to accomplish, no templates provided. I have seen pics on other sites that give me an idea of what it needed to look like, the narrow part was just made so the bolster could fit up thru it, then I fanned it out each way to give swing room for the motor and gear case. I got lucky and made them big enough that the car fit thru my curves on the first try. Been running the car upside down, one to adjust the worm to axle gear mesh(it was a bit to tight) and to wear the varnish off the axles and motor bearings from decades of sitting. Runs much smoother and quieter after about an hour in each direction so far. AD
