These are good locomotives.
Good videos, Alex, thank you. From the second video it looks like adding motors to the unpowered A units would not be too difficult. Am I correct about that? I have the CB&Q E9 and GN E7 A-A sets and they could both use a power upgrade....
Interesting! Thanks Alex!
GN Man, that could be done but you will need a different RCMC board as the one in the non powered unit does not support motor operation. It would be costly and you need to be a Lionel tech just to get most of the parts. I have just about all the Late issue Lionel E-8 diesels and the two motors will pull just about anything you want to put behind it. Good post Alex to give the guys a look under the hood. The Lionel E-8 is very well done.
Alex,
Thanks for showing us the “inerts” of another very nice Lionel engine.

Thanks for the info, Marty. I want to be able to pull 12 Atlas-O CZ cars with my E9 units and 8 to 10 GGD Empire Builder cars with the E7’s. Is one powered unit with two motors enough?
You should have no problem. I have pulled my K-Line 10 car ESE 21 inch cars with my Penn Central E unit. It walks away with them.
What's with the ALCo Control Stand? Yet they can't get that in an ALCo PA?
Thanks Alex! Very cool to see the innards.
Great engine and agreed a great puller for my passenger express reefer sets!
A nice look inside of the engines, Thanks ALEX!!!!

It's not impossible, but you would need to change the trucks to powered ones and of course need two motors and hardware, along with wiring. Also one motor would need speed control
Alex
Also thank you all for the nice comments.

My New York Central and Pennsylvania E8 engines were perfect out of the box. They are a bright spot in my Lionel purchases. The NYC E8s will pull one of two seven-car Empire State Express passenger car sets from the first run. My NYC ESE J3 pulls the others. The Pennsylvania E8 is waiting for the 10 Broadway Limited cars.
