I just picked up my first MTH PS2 ABA diesel with 5V boards. Both A Units are powered. Would both A units have batteries or only one. I Want to put in fresh batteries before I power this up. I have read about slave boards but have not come across them yet.
I am asking as there are no instructions.

Only the leading A unit has a battery. The trailing unit has a slave boarding and lacks a battery.
Thanks Barry. As it turns out the trailing A has an issue with motor power. Lights and couplers work but motors don't turn.

Which set did you acquire Pete? Interesting that after all this time you haven't had a MTH ABA. You just might like them.... 
Sam, its a New York Central Alco PA. Further investigation shows it has a 3 V board which must be one of the first as it was made in 2004. I have been looking for one for a couple of years now.
Now I have to sort out the issue with the trailing A.
