You know , the early 2000's #38025 and 38044.

In the quest to find an excuse for the extra long firebox.

I'm sure many specific details would be wrong, but could this "abomination" be the approximation of the K5?

I've searched high and low for measurements with no luck. One post from another forum claims the Pennsy used an M1 boiler for the k5. In which case, it appears Lionel did the same for these tmcc k4s.

Pennsy experts please set me straight. I apologize for any anxiety I may have caused😉

Those Lionel engines are indeed an approximation of a K5, in the same way that the postwar Lionel 675/2025 2-6-4's were an approximation of a K4s.  In other words, nice toy but not a scale model of anything.  The same can be said of the Lionel H9/H10 2-8-0's, the MTH E6s 4-4-2's and other 3-rail locomotives.

I sort of have a soft spot for the K4 and a halfs. The two cab numbers both have their own individual and unique sound sets and they sound great. I have used them in a few of my projects. Total shame they are not available right now (anymore?).

They also had a nice diecast version of the 110P70 tender, preferable to the smaller 70P70 of the ex-K Line Legacy K4s. I wish Lionel would have used it instead.
