Directly in parallel with the track power from the locomotive. I suggest a 2A trip PTC in series with the lead to protect the tether between the locomotive and tender.
However I want to power the tender directly from the track not from the loco
Well, you'll need two pickups for reliable power. Also, it would be really useful to know the exact model of Hudson, Lionel has made Hudson models from before WW-II, at least 80 years and many models!
