I have been using DCS since it came out and have been quite happy with it.
I have several Legacy engines that work just fine with the DCS remote.

Am I correct that I have all the Legacy  features except quill able whistle with the DCS remote?

If I pickup a Legacy system at York how does it hook up with 2 TIU's?

Thanks guys

Actually, you lose quite a few Legacy features when operating through the DCS remote.  You won't get 200 speed steps, quillable whistle, as well as the lighting extensions.  I'm sure there are other things as well.

Adding Legacy or TMCC to an existing DCS layout is pretty easy.  You'd connect it to one of the TIU's with the MTH serial cable, connect the Legacy base to the outside rails, and you're off.

You get ZERO Legacy features when using the DCS controller, you only get the basic TMCC functions. The only way to access the Legacy features is by using the CAB2 remote.

Hookup is the same as you are set up now, just swap the old TMCC base for the Legacy base. Wire the Legacy base up the same way the TMCC base is now,  do not leave them both hooked up.

Captain John,

do not leave them both hooked up

Actually, you can keep both command bases connected, as long as you do it as per the below diagram from The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition, page 124. You also would connect only the Legacy Base's "one wire" to the tracks, again as per the diagram below.

If you connect both command bases as shown, the following operation is possible:

  • The DCS Remote will operate all PS2, TMCC and conventional engines in their respective modes, and will operate Legacy engines in TMCC mode
  • The Cab-1 will operate TMCC engines and Legacy engines in TMCC mode
  • The Cab-2 will operate TMCC engines, and Legacy engines in Legacy mode.
