I got my hands on an AMC/ARC Log Loader (6-24115) to put on my layout.  I want to be able to control it via my handhelds, but I'm not sure how to best add it to a Legacy layout.  My guess is to use the SER2, is this correct?  And I'd connect the log loader controller to the screw terminals on the SER2 and not need the serial connector breakout cable?  Unlike other Lionel LCS part manuals that give some examples on how to wire things up, the SER2 manual is pretty bare bones.

Now for the harder question.  What if I don't want to use the controller?  The log loader will not be near enough to the edge to use the controller, and the location I have for it does not have a nice place to put the controller.  I'd rather not just mount the controller hidden under the layout just to be able to connect the command base to.  So would I be able to use the AMC2 to control the log loader?  Lionel has no manual on their site for me to read, guess it's too new.  And like the old AMC, does the new AMC2 only control 2 items, so to control the 3 of the log loader I'd need two AMC2s?

Okay, the manual for the Log Loader shows how to connect it to a TMCC base station using the old Command Base Cable (Sold separately.), which is a serial connector with a two wire pigtail you plug into the Log Loader controller.  My question is about connecting it to a Legacy system, via LCS.  Can I just use wire to plug the Log Loader controller into the SER2 dat/com screw terminals, or do I need to find the Command Base Cable and use the serial connector on the SER2?  That is the 1st half of my question.  The Log Loader manual does not tell me that, hence why I was confused about it being posted as an answer to my question.

The 2nd half is what can I use, and how would I wire it, to be able to use the Log Loader in Legacy without using the supplied controller as I don't have room for it on the layout.  From what I can tell I would need an AMC2.  But there is no manual for it, so I don't know if I need one or two AMC2s.

  • Once you connect your SER2 to the base using the supplied PDI-wall pack power supply, you can connect the dat and com terminals of the log loader to either the serial 9 pin connector of the SER2 (using a Lionel 9 Pin to wires cable) or to the wiring terminals on the SER2. Connect Dat of the AMC/ARC to OUT of the SER2 and COM to COM. Then follow the instructions of how to control the AMC/ARC with the handheld CAB. I do not believe any other modules or manual controller is needed.
