My wife and I are in Upstate NY on vacation, and stopped by the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. There have been discussions of this RR before, but I thought I post some new pics.

The first thing we noticed where the new RailCycles.  They have three and making more.  You rail cycle for six miles then return in a wagon pulled by a railcar.  They say its great fun and the plastic wheels make no sound, allowing you to get close to the wildlife.

For those that want a more traditional scenic RR experience they have two diesels for the excursions (no steam), one in great shape.  They also have a switcher.

They also had some interesting MoW equipment.

We couldn't stay long because we were meeting some friends, but may be back for the fall foliage trips.  My wife (1st pic) wants to give the RailCycles a try.

Looks like this is out of North Creek, NY.  My back yard when I was a kid.  The Hudson River is pretty unimposing up there (less than 100' across), nice rapids for kayakers.  From there you are an hour from Lake Placid (Olympic training grounds) and Lake Champlain and Lake George (lots of French and Indian War history (Last of Mohican) and some early Revolutionary War).  Easy to spend a week vacation if not black fly season!

I believe those pics were taken at Thendara near Old Forge. The Adirondack RR runs from Utica to Thendara and beyond a few miles and also between Saranac and Lake Placid. The line out of North Creek has suspended operations last I heard. Its owned by a different group.

Yep, the scenic RR is just outside Thendara, NY a few miles south of Old Forge, NY on Rt 28.  The RR follows the Moose River to the south, and the North Branch Moose River to the  north.

The operation from north creek to Saratoga was operated by Iowa Pacific. Unfortunately is went under and the towns have terminated their contract. The next step is for the towns tland county to figure out what to do with the line.

Weren't there plans for Adirondack Scenic to link the two sections so you could ride from Utica to Lake Placid?

I am not sure what the current situation is but there has been a tug of war between the Railroad and nature lovers who want to convert the unused section to another trail. Not sure why they think they need another trial with over 9,000 square miles of park land at their disposal.

Hopefully someone else can fill us in.

Definitely NOT North Creek! I was there just after the 4th of July this year, and none of the equipment Ron shows was there, nor the buildings. Also, the roadbed for the Saratoga and North Creek is in very bad shape. I was amazed that they could actually run any thing on it. The Adirondack RR roadbed is in far better shape, at least what was shown in the pictures.

I grew up in the Glens Falls area, and return there from time to time to visit family.  Had come across the North Creek/Saratoga operation in some brochures and was dying to give it a try on one of the brunch excursions.  I was much dismayed to learn it was belly up.

Mike A,

I grew up in Glens Falls too.  GF High '83 graduate.  Send me a note to email in profile if there is overlap.
