In my latest efforts to get my new Railking Y6B Imperial 2-8-8-2 to perform well on my layout, I had to replace a switch as well as a number of smaller pieces of Lionel 0-27 style tubular track. Two grade crossings had to be replaced as well, which is where we are having issues.

Since I had to tear out the crossing to replace the track, I rebuilt them as I had did the other crossings 2 years ago by using Woodland Scenics "Smooth-it" followed by grey paint after the smooth it dried. I have done this many times before without problems and the other untouched crossing remains cool to the touch. Wet smooth it is poured on both sides of the track as well as in between. All 3 rails are hot to the point where you can't touch them. Thankfully I realized this now! At first I thought it was caused by a short as their was a derailment on the crossing (which is when I noted the heat) but then realized the other "new" crossing was hot as well.

Obviously this needs to be dealt with but I do hope to NOT have to rip this track out (again) as many pieces were specially cut and this is the third time this track has needed major adjustments in recent past. Thanks!

Is it possible your "Smooth-it" is still wet and conducting through the moisture?

Fred

The insulators are there. The smooth-it was fully dry (or so I thought) so I didn't think that was it until at put a hole in it last night and much of it was a watery mud-like consistency, even though it was fully dry and solid on the surface. Pulled out a good bit and let it sit overnight to air out and dry. Flipped power on for a minute earlier this morning and it at least didn't heat up to the point of burning in a millisecond. Not to mention I was on my way out and didn't have much time to play with it....I think the smooth it caused it.
