It depends on what halls you went to at York. I only went to the Orange, Brown, Purple and Black halls. I didn't get to see a lot of the postwar stuff in the other halls. I get to see that at Allentown. No matter what train show or how many train shows you attend, you never know what treasure you may find.

I think Allentown is quite different.  Besides you'll see me and I couldn't make it to York!

I had the pleasure of being there once......Spring Thaw 2012. 

The breakfast at HamFam was fun.

The modular layouts were good.

There was indeed more postwar and less newer stuff......but it was well worth the experience for me.

Allentown is a different experience than York.  You get to see different dealers and trains than you do at the TCA ED Meet.

Plus, you can do do the whole show comfortably in one day, although a lot of the folks who come to the show come for both days. Seems to be more time to examine things.

Also, it is a great opportunity to drop by the OGR booth and get two issues of the magazine free with a new one year subscription.  We are also bringing the latest OGR videos, Great Layout Adventures 10, and a selection of our newer Ameri-Towne buildings.

A lot of people can't attend York and the Allentown is a very good alternative for them.

Looking forward to seeing you on November 9th and 10th at Allentown.

Well said Ed Boyle.  The other thing is that you can take pictures and at 11 we have a group picture taken in front of the OGR booth.

Ed, will we be able to meet the "AD MAN"?  He is certainly invited to the breakfast to see Chuck devour whipped cream and strawberries!

Not much different than 10 years ago when we had a local show almost every week or two. IMO there are less than a half dozen dealers that set up and display in Allentown exactly the same as in York. Of course there are others with their York items, but they are displayed differently and with a different mix of products. So it may not be recognizable. This time of year Allentown comes shortly after York so you will naturally see some of the same stuff.

rrvisc, You are missing a lot not going thru the other halls. Do you think there is no new stuff in those halls?

I have to agree with the other people here in saying that Allentown is very different than York. I know I see some things which I already saw at York, but I always see a lot of things which I did not see at York.

Personally, I always look forward to both shows, even when they are only a few weeks apart. Both are always a great time (with breakfast before Allentown being a bonus)

In short, what they have in common is they are both events that are NOT to be missed !

Thanks for sharing the pictures of the Lehigh Valley HiRailers layout! We will have our DCS/TMCC demo modules there for the First Frost show. The full blown layout will be set up at the Spring Thaw meet at the end of February.

I think the main point is that Allentown has dealers that are NOT found at the Mid-Atlantic Greenberg shows. In past years, the OGR Forum members breakfast has become a nice tradition. 20-25 people usually show up between 6;30-7am at a diner very near the fairgrounds. Early entry tickets (which are available at the breakfast) will get you in the show at 8am. New people are always welcome! You might order the "Genna Breakfast Special"...pink pancakes with little purple umbrellas on them.

Yes that is the dog that used Ed as a chew toy.  I am holding him in the group picture ( with the owners permission of course ) He was quite the hand full to control.

The November show of the same year ( 2012 ) the dog was there again ( bigger of course ) and I went to pet him and he latched onto me and started chewing, so he had not been broken of doing this which I thought was not a good thing for a dog accessible to the public to be allowed to do. This past Feb show the dog was not there. We shall see if he is there next week. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the breakfast

Allentown is a decent show.  I've picked up some MTH rolling stock over the last couple years.  I look for shows in the region and try to check them out when ever I can.  I've hit the bigger shows in PA, NJ, MD, DL and the small shows at the local fire hall. 

Since I don't collect postwar, I go to train shows essentially for new production.... including York.  Although Gryzboski & Nicholas Smith still attend Allentown, I stopped going a couple years ago when Charlie Ro gave up on it.  I verified this with him at York & he told me last year he would no longer do the Allentown show (no reason given).  Some may think that odd, but the loss of Ro @ Allentown made my approx. 200-mile round-trip there not worth it.   

One thing that Allentown has that York doesn't is a selection of "HO" and "N". I have a very small "N" layout, and bought a Kato GG1 there. I've also bought a few Woodland Scenics ready-built "HO" buildings that work well with my AF "S" layout. Before you leave, stop at the large indoor farmer's market a few steps away.

Over the past couple of years, we have made Allentown a "husband and wife" trip. I hit the train show while she wanders around the Pennsylvania Dutch farmers market. It's a "win-win."

I no longer attend york due to time issues but I do make time to always attend and participate at Ag Hall. Plus the farmers market is a bonus...

Looking at all of us that early on a Saturday morning is rough enough and now you want us to look at Chuck's pancakes?  Give us a break!

Really like Chuck, but now back to trains.  Have found some really neat stuff now that I am cleaning out the garage and the new train room. (Remodeling for new layout) Figure some people will want these goodies.
