Yes we’ll done, lot of nice features but like legacy I’ll be late to the party. No reason to get it until there’s some super feature I really want or my cab2 craps out. It will be nice for many to get all the different LC/TMCC/legacy under one package
Great job @MartyE and thank you so much for doing this! I was a little bummed with the answers pertaining to using a game controller but it doesn't sound like the idea is dead. It actually sounds to me like the CAB3 has a lot of potential for further development/expansion. I almost got the sense that Lionel has spent so much time working on the CAB3 that they haven't explored possibilities. That will likely be good for us!
Bummer that the CAB3 won't run with the Legacy command base, I hope they revisit that at some point.
As many have said, very well done, Marty and Dave. I missed the beginning, so I will have to go back and watch it later. I did hear that, at least initially, the new app will only work with the Cab3 base, so I will definitely not be an early adopter, but I am definitely intrigued.
I did have a question based on some of the discussion about keeping the Cab2 base as a charger (love my hand held controllers!!!) - would the caveat about keeping it 5’ - 10’ away also hold for a 993 base??? I thought that it was, for all intents and purposes, just a charger. Thanks.

Correct, the 993 is JUST a charger. There is no TMCC 455KHz transmitter anywhere in this unit.- Thus the rule of having to keep it away does NOT apply to the 993 base.
The reason again why the 990 base must be far away, is that the power supply is still grounded via the power adapter and because the base continuously transmits the 455KHZ signal that cannot be turned off, even without a wire attached to the post on the base- there is still enough RF to cause interference.

Simple, what if you can't get another of the now unobtainable CAB2? What if your CAB2 dies it's final death and you can't get it fixed?
Some follow on questions that felt needed asked- specifically about the CAB3 app and about the Bluetooth side of the app given the video last night.
#1 are there specific 3rd party device requirements to enable features or just being compatible with CAB3 app? As an example, since the Bluetooth direct to engine side of the app can run 3 engines at the same time- is that a specific chipset or OS requirement of the 3rd party device? Also, asking, can it work on both tablets and phones, or other limitations?
#2 I did see what appeared to be the voice command icon in the Bluetooth side of the app, but also is voice streaming (a Lionchief 5.0 only feature) and, like the current version of LIonchief app, then have strict requirements on 3rd party device operating system and chipset- in order for voice streaming to function? https://ogrforum.com/...2#172611907079938312
Again, would be nice to know a list of what is known to work and known not work so people can prepare.

That's interesting, as I still have my original TMCC command base (still have one remote), connected to my system via LCS SER2. Both are only a few feet apart. No interference issues but I'm betting the wattage of the TMCC command base and the Legacy 990 is not the same.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together MArty
I've worked on multiple layouts where the Legacy base and the old TMCC BASE1 were side by side. The BASE1 had no connection to the track terminal, just a serial cable to the Legacy command base, and everything worked just fine.
If you're really worried about interference, one thing you can do is to power the BASE1 with a simple 2-pin power plug transformer of the proper 9-10 VAC rating, no earth ground, less possibility of any conflict.
If the TMCC and Legacy Bases can be connected using the Y-Cable included with the #990 Set or the SER2 and Y-Cable if using LCS, we should be able to use both the older bases with the Base 3 using the SER2 as well.

I do a lot of work with Bluetooth and BLE in my day job mostly in industrial environments - it is very chipset dependent. For example, older iphones had hard limits of 3 active bluetooth connections (well documented in early ios developer docs) - while newer ones seem to have no problems with as many as 20. I would bet that they are probably just looking to provide a reliable experience to the lowest common denominator while trying to introduce the fewest potential support issues. also, its a great way to upsell you to a base 3 - want to run more than 3 trains? upgrade!
Thank you Marty for the video. Great Information! But many of us has a small layout. Will be interesting to have a base3 to test it and check if signal is better than cab2 base. But, personally, I can't find any exciting experience using a cellphone as a remote to control a steam or diesel locomotive. I think Lionel should maintain the Legacy 993 to use with the base3, as a transition process. Why? because, right now, new users doesn't have the opportunity to buy a Legacy 990 or 993 from Lionel (discontinued) or pay $1200 for it from eBay.
Base 3 has a lot of new technology for future and, I can say Thank you for that, but will be interesting if Lionel adopt Legacy 993 again with Base3 as a package.

My current layout is pretty small as you can see from the demo at the end. While I never had track signal issues I did have the occasional Cab to base "red" blinking LED. With the limited time I've been playing with the Base3 loaned to me I haven't seen any communication "red" blinks on my Cab2.
I understand about the smart device but I am looking to the advantages of using one including the ability to add functions when Lionel develops them to temper my reluctance to embrace a smart device. Personally I think for me an iPad mini will help that.
I think we also forget that while Lionel is developing the Base3 and Cab3 app, they are still producing and engineering trains so there is a lot going on.

I got a bit in last night, not as much as I wanted to, but still great stuff to listen and learn. I do like it was said that going to the big clubs helped find issues with the Base 3 short comings at the time. Awesome stuff, catch the rest tonight.
BTW I did put the Base3 above my Base 2 for comparison is and it is almost if not exactly the same foot print although sits 90 degrees from where it faces. It looked bigger but it's not. For the event I placed in front and center of the layout.

I felt the same way until I bought the cab-2, it made the operation much more enjoyable. Especially with the Lionel subway cars. But I think at this time your stance is correct, I would wait to see how the cab-3 does in full shakeout.

That's it what happened to me. I tried move the antenna, move the cab2 base, everything and I'm still getting sometimes "red" blinking Led. Thank you for let me know that with the base 3 you didn't have that problem again. I will wait for it.

Marty, like you, I am planning to use an iPad Mini for the Cab3 app. Dave stated in one of the early Base3 videos that the new Cab3 app would scale for iPad use, unlike the current iCab app. I think the iPad Mini will prove to be the optimum size for the Cab3.
Thanks for the update on everything Marty. I’m also disappointed to hear that they weren’t able to make the new app backward compatible yet with the BASE2. Hopefully this goes smooth and they can revisit that.
Great to hear about the improved CAB-2 signal. I have issue at the club even with an extended antenna and even on the modular layout if I stand between the base and the cab it can loose the signal.

I'm not going to hold my breath for this feature. Lionel will have to spend more money on R&D so that people can use a free app and won't have to buy a BASE3. No profit to be made anywhere this venture and a whole new plethora of support woes for an older out of production BASE2.

Glad you found it interesting! As the first VLUG I think it went pretty good, a little long, but lots of information. I hope it's not a one and done.
Really enjoyed the video. I heard more good news than not. Only one free app download in the catalog description bothered me. Glad to hear it will be free for multiple downloads. The testing and modifications tells me they really want this to work out of the box. The updated webpage with continued support for LCS was great news also.
In regards to the remote issue, personally I originally learned on and primarily used the cab1 remote. Didn’t really care much for the cab2 remote. Already purchased the cab1-L remote for the eventual arrival of the Base 3.
Finally had the time to sit down and watch the video. Thanks, Marty (and Dave and the rest of the crew at Lionel)! There was a lot of info packed in there!
Seems like the Base3 might help with some of the signal difficulties we experience at our larger setups.

Thank you Marty! Great Job! I also am thinking an IPAD MINI. I saw where somebody said it would be scalable. Does that mean all the Screens, buttons and pictures will be bigger and clearer to fill the bigger screen?

A great deal was discussed regarding the App on a Phone. I am not sure of "Why Not", so I will ask the question just to close the door.
Will the App work on an Android Tablet? There appears to be a number of versions that contain different Processors, Screen Resolution, memory, etc., all ranging in price from around $300 to over $1000. Will one version work better or will the App run just as well on one as the other?
