no the new ones that just have been shipped by lionel--the E5/6 diesels

Well first, only the CB&Q, i.e. the Burlington had E5A and E5B units, which had fluted stainless steel sides, thus they looked quite a bit different that all the other E6 units for other railroads.

Second, did any of the eastern railroads, such as PRR or NYC, even own E6 units?

I am not aware of the NYC owning any E6. I know from the books "Black Gold and Black Diamonds" that EMC offered the PRR a sweet deal on E3' s but the PRR turned them down. The next E unit order was the E7's for the PRR and Ending E units with all E8 "A" units.

For anyone that has gotten one of the E6 sets, I have a question on setup. I know that they are two powered A units, my question is are they both programmed with the same ID, or do they require separate ID’s and need to be setup as a train?

I would expect to set them up as a 'train' like we do with all other lashups.  That will handle the correct lighting.  I got my KCS units and will post pics tonite!

I do hope that you are wrong. I was hoping that they setup like my Lionel SP and SF E8/E9 sets as one ID,  I am beginning to run out of useable ID's.

Here are pics of the KCS.  I programmed as #2 and #3 and made a Train as per standard legacy procedure.  I didnt read instructions.  Just programmed and go.

I have over used my cab numbers, i dont care.  Only has two digit.  Most of us have more than a hundred legacy engines, right?  I just over write...  Its so easy to program, i do in a second...

They are great!  Run really nice!  Nice Mars light...  smoke in both units, and power in both units...

I have the Sp and Sf e8 and e9s, but wasnt aware there was anything else program wise with them.  I just program as a train, and so direction lights are correct and uncouplers are correct.

Thinking about these new units, because both are powered i think you need to set up as a lashup in a train so lights and couplers work correctly as these are also POWERED.

The SP and SF E8/9 don’t have to be set up as a train. Just using 1 ID and couplers and lights work correctly, in fact the manual suggests using one ID.

Kempf...   I will have to check out the instructions.  I have them...  these are the ones you have?  Sp daylight e8 and sf e9?

Because of second power unit, i would think you do a lashup.  It would be cool if they set them up on one program code number.

I will have to start looking at the instructions!  Lol

I can tell you they work fine as a lashup.  Thats what i did...

Well, unless it says that in the manual I believe the answer is definitely NO; program the two engines with the same ID. I know that’s counter-intuitive, but read on.

Every Legacy A-A set I have had worked fine out of the box without being programmed as a lash-up. This started in my case with the VL Centipedes where, although Lionel provided a separate orange module for the powered rear unit, the instructions were to use only the front unit module and program the units to the same number. I think that they were already programmed to run as a unit.

(I’m guessing that the  rear unit module was only included in case you wanted to run that unit on its own, which would be nuts as the sound systems of the two were designed to work in synch.)

Check the manual. As orange modules are no longer standard I’d just follow the instruction for this set.kk

Super O Bob,  When you say that both engines have power, do you mean motors?  How many motors are in each A unit?

The usual set-up is two motors in the lead A unit and just smoke and electronics for lights in the second A unit.

The $899.00 price would indicate that there are only two motors in this AA set.

I see in the pictures and literature that there is no coupler on the front of the first A unit.  I am sure that will please some, but I run my engines both directions on the layout. Two electro-couplers would normally be expected.  Thanks for the information.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Super O Bob,  As I look at your pictures of the KCS units, the cab has no motor intruding into it,  Are the motors in the rear trucks only, to allow a more detailed Cab interior?  Is there a diminished pulling power because of the single motor in each unit?

I am working on detailing a set of seven 21" Challenger cars and am looking for power options beside my Vision Line Challenger.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Can use the same engine number on both engines works fine. They list for 999.99 and all four trucks are powered . The motors and cab dosen't seem to be a problem as was no problem with the last Lionel F7's I have. The only thing  wondering is if in fact the hatch comes off the top to fill the smoke units.

It appears to...  i filled from the hatch...

Lionel would have to set up second unit to be in reverse when it has same number as first unit.  I dont know how you tell it that.

I simply programmed each individually, built the 'train' lashup, so i could tell legacy system the second unit runs backward, and boom, it all worked perfect.

Im lazy, but even the lazyest can build a lashup in legacy in a few seconds.

I would not put it past lionel to have done a shortcut, but i am keeping my instructions 'mint' and unopened as they are already back in storage with the box!

It has motor.  Look in picture you can see the grey plastic motor cover hiding the motor.  I remember seeing it thru cab window.  Tomorrow i can maybe take a better pic.  These are supposed to have 4 can motors.

Do both units have sound as well?

I built a lashup, so only the front unit was making sound.  I think the rear unit does not have sounds.

I did look at the box lable and it just said power and smoke.  Lead unit said power, smoke and sounds.  Thats just what the sticker said.  I remember looking at it.

The trailing unit did not give an audible chirp when it was programmed like the lead unit did...  so i think there are no sounds in second unit.
