I'm redoing this MTH hopper. I'm in the final stages. Last night I sprayed all the pieces with Matte Medium over clear gloss. All the parts came out great except these two end pieces. Why did they crackle?

That will happen if you spray lacquer over enamel.
Looks like you might have sprayed the matte on too heavy over the color coat.....this is where rattle cans can sometimes not be your friend....looks like you got really lucky on the car body itself.....ain’t no fixing those two pieces....re-do, and slow down....if you must overcoat with a top coat of matte finish, first, allow plenty of time for the color coat to not only dry, but to completely cure out hard, ......then, when you do the matte finish, ( I’m assuming Krylon product , clear matte finish??) do a very light, and I mean light coat from a slight distance, let that coat dry completely.....30-40 minutes in perfect conditions ( 70-80 degrees and low humidity) ........then follow with one medium coat from a distance to hide gloss.....

Thank you both... Those 2 pieces are in the alcohol bath now. We'll see what they look like tomorrow.

Yeah, i've done that several times myself. Seems like it is better to spray from further away and do multiple coats. I tend to rush and put on extra which the rattle cans are only too happy to do.
You might also look at the forum topic about making a "Pacific" series Pullman car. He sprayed some sort of gloss coat from a rattle can over a Scale Coat II paint job and it didn't work well at all. Sometimes, it hasn't how we do the job, but what we do the job with.

The paint came off really easy today. Cleaned them up and re shot with yellow. Think I'll wait 48 hours before I do the clear coat.
