I'm just getting back to the hobby and discovered to my surprise that Lionel offers a starter set for a number of MLB teams, including the Yankees.  My brother is a very, very enthusiastic fan albeit it's been tough lately.

He has a Yankee room in his house with various autographed bats, balls and such.  He even has a replica, much smaller of course, of the iconic Yankee Stadium façade that he had a furniture maker fashion that goes around about 1/2 the room.

Two questions.  If you are a Yankee fan and either have the set or seen it in person, how is it cosmetically?  I've seen the set on the big train retailers' websites but they don't provide much information or pictures.

Second, is this set something that should be troublefree out of the box?  I'd hate to give him a Christmas present that becomes a nuisance or a headache.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'm a Yankees fan and I can confirm that it's been tough lately.  Worse there seems to be no relief on the horizon, so let's focus on trains.

The set you posted looks nice and I'm sure your brother would be ecstatic.  For roughly the same money, there's also a subway set from Lionel:

If you go to MTHTrains and search on Yankees, you'll see they have a ton of stuff.

Be aware that the locomotive in that Lionel set is based on the Polar Express movie look of the Pere Marquette 1225.  The movie animation greatly exaggerated the pilot and the Lionel toy captures the look, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Maybe you could get your brother a set of Luis Sojo baseball cards.  Luis Sojo?  Yes, Luis Sojo.  Look at his World Series Batting average.  Look at his salary.  Now compare both to A-Fraud.

Luis is retired and so is Joe Torre.  The curse has been reversed and the Yankees are reverting to the Steinbrenner era historical norm.  Money bought already developed and clearly identified talent from the early 70s As and the 95 Mariners.  But Steinbrenner money alone has not proven capable of properly evaluating talent or developing it.  Think Ken Phelps.

Tough lately?  Cry me a(n East) River and tell that to a Mets fan!  What is it with Yankees fans?  Are there any worse fair weather fans in sports?  Can any Yankees fan remember the 80s?

Can you buy your brother a little fortitude for Christmas? Or how about a Mariners boxcar autographed by Jay Buhner!

Yeah, for sure. Don't follow any more, much.

There were many of us Southerners who were "Yankee" fans, irony and contradiction

notwithstanding. I'm from the Mantle and Berra (just missed DiMaggio) era. That's when

they broadcast baseball but not pro football, at least not much.

...any connection with my being a New York Central fan? Hm-m-m-m...

As a kid growing up in Northern NJ during the late 1940s through the 1950s, I was a nut for the Yankees, and loved it whenever the catcher, Yogi Berra, got a home run. Of course in those days, the Yankees won many World Series, so they were easy to love. Our school "Safety Patrol" was treated to a game at Yankee Statium each year...so I was a patrol member.

However, if anyone had asked me if I wanted a Yankee train, I probably would have said I'd rather the PRR, thank you.

What is it with Yankees fans?

I'm not sure I understand the context.

Are there any worse fair weather fans in sports?

Yes.

Can any Yankees fan remember the 80s?

Since I was a season ticket holder at that time, yes, I remember the 1980s.  Worse, the nonsense that's going on today with their farm system and the contracts they're signing these days (Exhibit A: Brian McCann) reminds me very much of the wretched 14-year stretch from 1981-1995.

Cry me a(n East) River and tell that to a Mets fan!

Maybe one of the toy train manufacturers should create a series of boxcars devoted to the Mets pitchers who've pitched no hitters?

Hee hee.

Take a good look at the Lionel Berk set in person before you commit. Buy the Yankee subway series cars from MTH and the freight set as well as all the single sale cars. Hardest thing to locate is the Yankee bump and go trolley and water tower.

rat

yes I am a Yankee fan... oh and you can thank me for the Murderer's Row boxcar as well.

Well, I'm a Mets fan and I'll take a Mets Johan Santana no hitter railroad boxcar if someone makes one. So he's the only one to actually do it while a member of the Mets. Don't forget that you have had former Mets pitchers pitch no-hitters for the Yakees, Dwight Gooden, David Cone just to name 2 and many other former Mets pitchers like Nolan Ryan (7) and Tom Seaver have pitched them for other teams too.  Enjoy your laughs about the Mets now because by the end of next September you Yankees fans might be crying in your crying towels when the Mets have a better record next year. You lost Rivera and Jeter to retirement,  2 of the best ever to play the game I admit. Now you probably will lose Robertson and your farm club development is a joke, without George the purse strings have been pulled tight so get ready for another average season while the Mets have slowly built up their farm system with home grown talent especially pitching so they are stocked and getting ready to make some serious runs for a pennant.Okay, enough baseball,  let's get back to what we're here about. It's all about the trains. And don't forget it!

I'm a eternal fan of the underdog!  Even though I live in central Indiana, I proudly sport my Cubs wear frequently.  Jimmy Buffett was the very first concert ever at Wrigley and said that he would return when the Cubs win the World Series!  Go Cubs go!

OK  Definitely a Met fan  I guess Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Andy Petite, Brett Gardner, Ian Kennedy, David Robertson, Robinson Cano , Austin Jackson, Alfonso Soriano, Melky Cabrera, etc etc etc.

Here is my All time Home grown team

Catching  Yogi Berra  3 MVP's and 10 World Series Rings

First Base Lou Gehrig Cal Ripken’s streak died because he needed a day off and         got help from the grounds crew when he found Kevin Costner in bed with his wife.)

Second Base Tony Lazzeri  An epileptic that drove in 100 runs a season with Ruth and Gehrig in the lineup.  Who the heck was left on base

Shortstop  Derek Jeter 4 Rings 4 World Series MVP's yada yada yada

Third BAse Red Rolfe  OK I will give you not that many home growns at Third

Left Field  Roy White  Steady and smooth and one of the biggest class acts

Center Field  Joltin Joe DiMaggio  Hey he married Marilyn Monroe

Right Field  Mickey Mantle  Had to slide him to right because I think Joe D was better

Designated Hitter  Donnie Baseball Mattingly  This is your 80's guy

Here is my Starting pitching

Whitly Ford,  Lefty Gomez, Ron Guidry, Mel Stottlemyre , Spud Chandler

Here are my relievers

Mariano Rivera, Hal Renif, Bob Grim, Ramiro Mendoza, and Dellin Betansis

Does the Seattle MAriners have a have a home grown lineup like that  I think not.  Oh and by the way  Where did Jay Buhner come from?  Where did Robinson Cano come from? Where did Steve Balboni come from?  Steve who  Yup he played for the MAriners.   Where did Jim Beatie come from?  Where did Russ Davis come from? Where did Austin JAckson come from?  Where did Roberto Kelley come from?  Where did Doc Medich come from?

Every team has a mix of home grown and outside talent.  None of the other teams can compare a lineup of all time home growns as the Yankkes did

Mets fans care more about the Yankees than they do their own team.  Just go play ball why be obsessed with the Yankees and their fans.  Was Johann Santana a home grown?  Oops

The current Yankee plight can be traced to one thing.  All the players that Gene Michael drafted have retired.   He was the catalyst for the Yankee turnaround when he was in charge of the draft.  Since then the Yankee drafts have been abysmal.  I think we're about to see another reversal of fortune in NY between the Yanks and Mets. Last year was quite an aberration for both.  The Mets were under their projected wins based on run differential and the Yankees were historical y over in wins based on their negative run differential. I can't wait to see a (more) empty Yankee Stadium!.

A Yankee fan pointing out non-home grown players.  What a laugh!!  When I saw the Yankee fans cheering for Roger Clemens (who after all beaned the sainted Derek Jeter) I lost all respect.

Can there actually be an All NY Yankee Team without Babe Ruth? Come on now.
