I got a decent deal on it,because the tether from the tender looked like someone sat something heavy on it,and cut the female plug end OFF!!!!

I have never replaced a tether, and have no idea where to start with it.

Are replacement tethers available from MTH??,or does anyone have a spare one that would work with this engine that they would like to sell me??

I have seen the engine run with another similar tender, also with a 5volt board in it. As I said,I got a decent deal on it,but it was not cheap by any means.

Someone told me to just matchup the wires inside the tether color for color, and it should run again. But I also have heard that the color for color theory is not a standardized rule, that some engines are wired different than others, and I would have to use a meter on each connection.

Is there a standard 10 pin female connector I could buy from an electronics supply place online that would make this engine go???

Only the very end where the connector goes,is where this one got it"s head lobbed off. What would be the easiest, and then the BEST way to get this engine up and going??? What are my options??

It's Christmas Time, and Kenny wants to run his NEW,old train!!!!!It's a beautiful, heavy BEAST,and I can't wait to see how many cars it will pull!!!!  Thanks in advance for any ideas/opinions-Happy Holidays,Kenny Baughman

MTH has them.  The generic one for steam will work, but you soldering the ten leads on to a patch panel as originally done.  G

What G says. If you get a steam tether from MTH the colors will match. Its just a matter of matching the colors and splicing and soldering them together. I have done this a number times when replacing a right angle tether with a straight one.

Hello! And thanks for your replies!!! I added some photos,so you guys could see the fine mess I've gotten myself into.

Is that panel in the photos the patch panel that GGG mentioned???

It only has 9 places to connect to,I don't know what it is,this is why I am asking.Does one of the points on the panel get 2 wires???

The harness does plug into one side of the panel, via a plug.

I got this indirectly from MTH's Repair Department,I have to clean up the wiring before I try anything, but I was thinking I should be able to just splice the wires together, and cover each wire in shrink wrap,so they do not touch each other,But as Gunrunner said,I have exercised pause up to this point with it,it just seems like too easy of a fix for an MTH product.

Even though I am DYING to run it,I have had it about 10 days without doing anything to it as of yet.

So,what part number do I ask MTH for to get the steam tether???

Maybe the splice and shrink tubing would work???

I have a PS2 3 volt board I would like to put in it, but I have to get all of the other pieces from the kit,as I only have the PS2 3 volt board.   What would I tell MTH I need to have this 5v board swapped out for the 3volt board.

I do have a donor train around,I will post photos of it,to see if there are pieces we can take off of that one to make the 3volt kit complete.

I am a green newbie to working on MTH stuff, and will probably have someone else do the kit install for me. E-mail me with a quote if any techs could take this job on at this time of the year.

I just really wanna try to splice the wires today and see what happens!!!!But I need 5 volt boards also,(they make trains run for a little while!!) and I would hate to toast a completely never used(5 minutes on it),as I said this came indirectly from MTH's repair department overflow or something.

I did add the photos of the junker I got the tether out of.I doubt if there is anything on it of use in installing a 3 volt board. Thanks Guys!!You all are super people, and I hope you get that train you want this year for Christmas!!!!
