My ESE set arrived yesterday from Pat's.  As always, the customer service was great & the shipping prompt.  The set looks great!  Problem is, the engine doesn't run. When I put it on track I get as much or more amps than volts on the transformer.  On 2 occasions it was pulling 6.8 amps and only 6.1 volts!  The headlight does come on & there is a quick flicker of the cab light and an electrical "hum" at that point, but I shut it down to prevent further damage.  I'm not able to even program the engine.  With just the tender all is normal & the RailSounds start to come on when powered up.  With just the engine, or engine & tender on track, the issue returns.  This happens with the LEGACY remote both powered up & powered down, and w/the base both connected to and disconnected from the track.  There are no other objects on the track & no apparent debris to cause a short.  I believe I've tried it w/the smoke unit switches set to "Off" as well, but can't quite remember. Definitely have tried to power up in both "Run" and "PGM" modes unsuccessfully.   Haven't even gotten the passenger cars on track.

I did remember to remove the two "U" shaped foam pieces from both the tender & the engine.  Is there any other padding/insulation that I may be forgetting?  Of the four previous new LEGACY engines I've bought in the last year, two have had had to go to Lionel for service.  Hoping this isn't the 3rd of 5, but unless there's something that I might be doing wrong that anyone can suggest it looks like Lionel will get a call from me this afternoon.

FWIW, the LEGACY system will be going back to Lionel too, as it has a habit of randomly shutting down during running.  Not just powering down, but shuts off (with full charge) & must be returned to the base before it can be re-booted.  As someone returning to the hobby and new to O gauge & Hi-Rail this is extremely frustrating; this level of quality control issues is inexcusable, especially at the current price point.  Lionel's definitely on thin ice w/me....

As always, any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time.

With the amperage draw Gary and sandjam may have it.

Just some tips:

A legacy tender powered up alone will make sound as soon as it's powered.

Tender will NOT make sound when behind the Loco until the Loco is programmed with an id# or eng99 is used to address it and startup command is given.

Loco headlight should not come on until the Loco is addressed and startup command is given.

If you are able to try it conventionally the base must be unplugged from the wall as well. One side of the signal is transmitted through the ground lug on the base though the wiring of your train room. Loco will sit idle waiting for the (other)/track side of the signal

That engine has a short in it .. I would send it to Lionel unless you know what your doing taking it apart ..Unforantly it happens with Lionel's stuff from time to time . Another thing you need to consider is I heard you say it hums when you put power to it .. Are you using a old style transformer ? My 180 watt bricks just trip if theres a short.. I highly  recommend them over any power to modern engines including mth  .95% of the times they trip before you blow something up..

Thanks, guys.

I did completely disconnect the section of track that the LEGACY base feeds in to & still got the problem.   Was a temporary Christmas layout, and needed disassembled anyways.  Tried power-up on a 40" section of track w/just the track power & still failed.

Using a Z4000 transformer new w/in last 8 months.

Just opened mine, never tested it as its the wrong version, however I did notice one of the pickup rollers was wedged up against the chassis. I presume it happened during shipping, easy fix just loosen it and reinstall. Certainly this would cause a short.

Funny, my dealer sent me the wrong one also.  Sending it back for the correct one.  Simple mistake but I have to wait another few days.
