I've been in touch with Scott Mann at 3rd Rail - since he is basing the upcoming Superliner cars off of the GGD ATSF El Capitan hi-level car run from 2017, he may be interested in re-running the hi-level cars. Like other of his sets, these would be offered in 2R and 3R. As those of you know who have any of these cars, they are absolutely top quality.

If you are interested, please post your interest here so Scott can gauge the demand for these sets. I for one would love to have a set. The old K-Line 3-rail hi-levels, not as nice as the GGD cars, are running on Ebay for $300-400+ each! Ballpark cost would be $350/car.

You aren't committing to anything, and Scott isn't promising a run. This is just to see what interest is out there. I am just a customer of his, and interested in seeing these re-run, I have no other affiliation with the company.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Hi Bob,

I have experience with Protocraft brass ball bearing-equipped 100 Ton freight car trucks vs. American Scale Models solid (bronze) bearing brass 100 Ton freight car trucks and the difference is VERY noticable.  It is not a gimmick.  The ball bearing equipped trucks roll significantly better than the solid bearing trucks, including Atlas solid bearing trucks, which roll very well for a mass production truck.  If there is any grade whatsoever, the car equipped with ball bearings will roll.

Tell me more about ball bearing trucks?  Is that just a gimmick, or are you expecting some noticeable performance gain?

I have many GGD sets without the ball bearing trucks & they all needed some serious lubrication & break in time. My first set with the Ball Bearings is the 1938 Super Chief. There is a big difference in how these cars ride right out of the box. It’s a much needed and appreciated improvement.

While a third run of these cars won't be happening until after the Superliner project is done, here is some eye candy from the first and second runs.

First run El Capitan.  Can't wait for Sunset FP45s down the road.

Second run Southwest Limited.  Can't wait for SDP40Fs down the road.  The second run was a definite improvement over the first run in terms of operation.

Definitely not a gimmick Bob, I too have sets of the Protocraft RB trucks and unless they are on perfectly level track they will run away… fast, and that’s before lubing them.☺️

I think that it would be an absolutely wonderful idea to manufacture the “ATSF El Capitan” cars again! I was a little late to the Startinggate last time they were offered! The only thing I’m hoping for is that it’s sometime into next year mid to late year before arrival (And Payment) because I’m pretty heavily committed to Golden Gate Depot right now for purchases I’ve already ordered. I will definitely purchase one of each car which means the multi car set and whatever extras are available and possibly a second set of extras. Oh boy there I go again!:-o

Would that mean that the transition car would be manufactured again? I just checked and it appears that orders are closed now for the run of transition cars for the El Capitan. I could be wrong about the orders but I couldn’t find it in the reservation form. If we knew this for sure that Scott would remanufacture the El Capitan I would be willing to order my transition of cars now if he could adjust the order he has already sent in. Unfortunately I think that that would cause a lot of confusion is if everybody tried to jump on board with it now. Well hopefully Scott can chime in on this! Thank you!:-)
