Is there are way of releasing the armature from the motor frame of a Lionel #152? It is attached to a small gear(?) that keeps the armature in place. Is there a tool or "trick" in removing the gear?

I would start with a pin punch. The frame would have to be adequately supported. Normally pinion gears are not reusable. You should be thinking in terms of a replacement pinion. The intermediate gear is also well worn. Replacing it would require removing the wheels. How far do you want to go on this project?
Yep pin punch , or if there is a little bit of clearance between the gear and the frame , a mini gear puller ... found online or at a model hobby shop , used a lot in slot car circles etc ..
or similar
We would normally slice a side of the gear off w/ a Dremel cut-off wheel and replace when ready to re-assemble. Harry
Thanks all for your responses. Harry Henning do you sell armatures for Lionel #152 and the gear it is attached to? Is there a specific name for the gear?
Thanks again.
The Lionel 152 Electric use the 150 humpback motor. I've attached the 152's service manual (2-page pdf). As seen in the manual, the pinion gear is part number SL-85 and the armature is part SL-15.
If Harry can't help you, ttender.com has the pinion gear. I'd email jeff@ttender.com about the armature itself. He doesn't list it in his parts list but may be able to help.

We have the gears for sale. The armatures are on an exchange basis. We need your old armature for the core and shaft I.D., as some 'O' & "std." motors are .112 or .125 shaft size. We use old core and supply w/ new shaft, gear, brushes were available, & new commutator. $65.00 + shipping Harry
