Atlas recently posted the photos from the latest run of Trinity 5161 Covered Hoppers , due in the 3rd Quarter...   Anyone have details on the DRGW orange version, seems total fantasy to me, but who knows?

Could have ran 8 #'s in the IAIS even some ex. farmland versions...

The Southern Pacific took over the D&RGW in 1992 and the Union Pacific took over the SP in 1997.

It is highly unlikely that the UP has a heritage series for the D&RGW using the Trinity 5161 covered hoppers, but they do reuse reporting marks from old railroads.

This is a 5161 Covered Hopper to run with the most modern D&RGW or UP locomotives.

Mike:

Got no details on the D&RGW 5161,but was delighted to see some movement being made toward some more modern era listings. I,like you, wish for 8-12 listings instead of 4 car#s. I ordered my CSX cars last year & bought 12. But with Atlas' history of reruns,(non existent),I'm wondering if I shouldn't try for more as the chances of rerun will be small. Look at the lack of reruns on the Atlas CSX 4750s&50'6" CSX boxcars-non existent. At least Atlas could offer decals in general colors & shapes to renumber & relettering.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Not total fantasy, depending on one's definition of "total." Here's DRGW 15555 and 15551. Four bays, not the Trinity, of course. I don't have time to look further, but if Atlas did it, they're usually pretty good about finding a prototype.

Thanks guys.. Certainly would have guessed some sort of alternate reality "fantasy" scheme.  The ACF 4 bay referenced is obviously a close resemblance for more present day modelers.   As pointed out though, would have been nice to stick within the number class in case those who might actually buy this model have some Weaver/Lionel or other 3/4 bay coal hoppers.

None the less, I won't be buying any of the Rio Grande, rather the IAIS, CSX and BNSF will get my $$$ from this run.

Alan,

Not to go too far of topic... but check out the announced Lionscale offerings, they are from the acquired Weaver tooling.   They will at least be on par with the TM cars, give you 6 more #'s, and are easily converted to 2R.

Note the lettering on the Atlas car is smaller and no & in DRGW, I could not find an image of this car on any website, just saying!

As Atlas continues to rerun its most popular cars there are only so many accurate paint schemes, typical run is 4 + road names [based on special run requirements 250-300 the production is 1200-1500] my best estimate. If it takes a realistic deviation allowing some modelers license to build out reservations to get the model produced I don"t see a problem for Atlas, the buyers will dictate the reservations. The Berwick 60' HYcube is a good example they have already produced all accurate road names for this car [although not 100% accurate I would like to see this car in the RailBox scheme] MTH,Lionel etc paint for any scheme they think will sell, I think we all know that,JMO

While it certainly wouldn't be accurate, I too might bite on a TTX version of the 60' hycube.  I may be more interested in something along these lines ???

That being said, while it would take new tooling, they could very easily make some new body variations for Gunderson, ICC and FMC for that matter which would utilize a lot of their existing Berwick underframe.

Well back in the day the first non prototypical paint scheme for the Trinity was done for a much requested KCS color scheme as a special run for AM Hobbies, while the same specs as the Trinity 5161 hopper the KCS cars were built by another freight car builder and there are obvious differences in construction, this allowed Atlas to maintain their prototypically correct paint schemes. In todays market that may no longer be an option for Atlas. Based on past mfg I seriously doubt seeing Atlas doing variations on their freight car models beyond paint schemes.just saying!

Looks like one of our operatives from the Isle of Denial has infiltrated Atlas.

Say it isn't so....

Mike:

Take heart in the fact that Atlas labels it "Alternate Reality". Those in pure denial would make no such disclaimer.

P.S. Didn't see the GSC offerings or I might have come of the Isle temporarily for those. I have a weakness for covered hoppers and heritage units.

That's really a tragedy that Atlas o is going down the faux route. All the hard work Jim w. Did to portray Atlas O as a prototypical mfg. Is being eroded away. When these hoppers first came out, it was stated they are the most mfg modern hoppers in the 1990's. With Atlas o already applying faux paint schemes, it makes me wonder if the hopper was more numbers than paint schemes or does the Atlas O crew do not want to do legwork in obtaining private road names for these cars?

Matt, diesels with headlights in the wrong location are like painting the Warbonnet scheme on a GG1

Bear in mind even though there are numerous private rd names on covered hoppers these are basically bland paint schemes with reporting numbers, safety stripes on newer cars and repaints and a set of initials, now prototypically these are the most common schemes on todays freight cars  the question is how many reservations can these paint schemes generate for Atlas, just saying

Hibar,

I TRUELY understand what you're saying, was having this thought the other day. If there's not enough interest for a car, naturally it won't be produced for modelers. Unless the interest comes close to the number of cars required for a run,it won't happen.

this is common in all scales, but with O being the smaller market,it hits here even more. So if I,(and others), want particular cars,my only choice is hope I can have them custom decorated which is very expensive. So,if I want more variations of certain cars, example FAMILY LINES,CSX,etc.,I'd better stay in HO,where those variations have been done or are likely to be done.

Just my observation.

LOL. Saw one of those and I was intrigued at the same time my skin was crawling. Coming out of denial for a moment, I have a pair of MTH ATSF SD24's that I'm still trying to rework so I can put GP20 cabs on them like Santa Fe ordered them with. The location of the motor on the short hood is the problem. Of course, once I figure it out, 3rd Rail will come out with a correct one.

I bet you would be surprised on the private, regional/shortline, updated striping, weathered... I would be all over the FLIX, IAIS Ex. FLIX cars...   I may up my actual IAIS order to 4 of each number, just so I can renumber them.

On the BNSF heritage series, I think that is why they released them in the GSC vs a normal run.  I believe Jerry K likes BNSF?

Certainly cars like the original GATX and the NAHX cars are very plain from the 2009/2010 runs... But they are some of the most requested cars...  There are a bunch of Cargill variations as well which would be nice!

I have the cars you mentioned and am in for 2 of the CSX cars however these are probably the last ones I will buy from this series as I model more than collect and don't have room for a large fleet of cars. I suspect Atlas had sufficient requests tor the DRGW scheme to produce it ,possibly no dealer was willing to do a special run of this paint scheme. I would like to see a Masterline centerbeam flat car and 50' /60' HYcubes produced  in the future just saying!

Good Day Mike,

Thanks for posting pictures of the future 5161 hoppers. I will be cancelling my order for (24) IAIS Hoppers if the roof hatches are white. I asked Jerry about these hoppers before I ordered. The white hatches look like crap! I can only guess that Jerry was given the wrong information on the color of the hatches on the IAIS and Rio Grande hoppers!

Frank,

The color of the roof hatches will be the same as the side of the hopper on the Iowa Interstate and Rio Grande but silver on the CSX. Yes the Maxi Stack IV will be available for sale in 2016, thanks.

Hmm... Many of these hoppers do have white or appear to have white hatches.   Once they are dirty and/or only have the typical 3/4 view can't easily determine the color of the hatches.  I know Athearn did these in HO with white covers.  Not a big deal to me, since these cars are not even trinity built, IIRC they are the Gunderson version with a 5200 cu ft capacity.   I certainly will not cancel my order!

Athearn HO Scale version below....
