From wikipedia:

"In the computer industry, vaporware is a product, typically computer hardware or software, that is announced to the general public but is never actually manufactured nor officially cancelled. Use of the word has broadened to include products such as automobiles."

It sounds to me that the Atlas c40-8w would fit the above description perfectly.

I will try to remember to ask my LHS about this engine tomorrow. I talked to them about ordering one of these (3 rail) well over a year ago (could be closer to two years ago?). They were unable to order one at that time. Time passed and then within the last couple of months they told me they were finally able to order one for the store and I could have it if I still wanted it. Not sure of the current status as I haven't talked to them about it again since then?

As for the MTH diesels, Some have very good sound, others not so good. They are not all the same in sound quality. I used to think Lionel had the top sound, but I have a couple of recent MTH engines that sound awfully good. Something a 2-railer wouldn't be interested in, but one of my favorites is a RK Scale SD-45. Right after I got my RK Scale version, they offered a Premier version, which my LHS just got in a few weeks ago. I'm thinking about trading in my RK Scale for the Premier version. Not sure they offered this in a 2 rail version, but it was in either the 2014 v2 or 2015 v1 catalog.

I asked my LHS about the Atlas Dash-8's today, they have a total of 3 on order (2 are 3-rail and 1 is 2-rail), but they had no updated information from Atlas on them as to shipping or delivery dates. So same status as when they told me they had ordered them a couple months ago. They did not know if these engines could still be ordered as they had already placed their orders.

I thought JD's Trains had closed up shop and had made arrangements with another dealer to handle all their orders? If that is the case I would check with another Atlas dealer. Mr Muffins trains is a forum sponsor and I believe he is also a large Atlas dealer. I have seen Mr Muffin post here about shipping and availability of several Atlas products. If I was really interested I think I would give him a call about the engine.

I wouldn't give the shipping dates from any of the train manufacturers much thought. These dates are usually missed, sometimes by many months or even years. The last couple of years Lionel and MTH have been getting better at being closer to meeting their dates (only missing by a month or two with some items, others may still take longer). So it's really anyone's guess when something will arrive. While Lionel and MTH seem to be getting their manufacturing back to a more reliable state, Atlas seems to have had a lot more manufacturing problems that have lasted a bit longer than the others. However, it seems they are finally starting to get caught up a little and maybe they will be back on track soon too. We can only hope.
