Baby Mikado, what's this sound?

Sounds like the audio board has a problem.  Is this a Lionel or MTH locomotive?  Looks a little like MTH, but it's hard to know.

Sorry, John, I should have given more information. It is Lionel 6-11100, 2-8-2 Mikado with TMCC and Rail Sounds 5.0. Power is a ZW.

 

 

What transformer are you using. Sometimes they will produce wanted noises.

I think I'd start by reseating all the boards in the tender.  Since this has the generic RS power supply, you could try swapping that from a working locomotive, it sounds like the power is cutting in and out.  You can also try putting that RS5 board into another locomotive to see if it works there.

The sound is that of the annoying helicopter that messes up everyone on the grounds video sound by following along on steam excursion trips.

Gunrunner John, I think you once again gave the correct advice. I presume those brown "chips" are the sound boards. I did not try to pry them off, but just pressed them more firmly. At first, I had only whistle, bell, blowdown, etc. Then I pressed "1" several times and, voila, all is back. and, no helicopter!

 

 

Well, you never pry the chips on the board out without the correct tool.  However, they do get oxidation on the leads and cause issues, apparently you moved them enough to solve the problem.

 

Nice job.... Serious  problem solved in less than 5 hours. No shipping.

Thank you again, Gunrunner John. I had momentary thoughts of trying to pry the boards off with a small screwdriver. fortunately I thought better of it.

I still think Gunrunner John should write a Legacy/TMCC book like has been done for Super Streeets and MTH DCC.

Glad you got the engine repaired via John to get the sounds back. These are very nice engines, and great sounds. Mine sees quite a bit of action. I remember many folks were pleasantly surprised when it came out, when they found out it was equipped with RS5.
