First, I am new to this a serious hobby and I am reading constantly to get up-to-speed, please bear with me.

The last time I operated a model train, there was no such thing as DCC so I have decades of catching up to do.

I have several barns (2 block/brick, 2 wood) on this farm I purchased in the Smoky Mountains.

I have decided to utilize one these for a model railroad.

I wanted to begin with a model the 1900s - 1940s Appalachian region timber and copper industries from the East TN areas.

Having obtained a few Spectrum DCC Shays and Climaxes, to get started, I would like to find a way to add smoke generators to them.

Since these are DCC, shouldn't they already come with smoke capability?

Since there is no generator installed in these, can I modify these locos to smoke?

What type of electronic modifications are required to accomplish this and can I get these to "puff"?

Thanks in advance for your patience with an old "newbie".

Does the amount of residue vary with the manufacturer of the smoke fluid?

I don't suppose any one has come up with a "cleaner" smoke?

Well, thanks for the insight.  I had not even considered that.

Do you find the lack of smoke from your locos diminishes, in any significant way, from the aim for prototypical realism or even the enjoyment of running the trains?

I suppose after a while, you wouldn't miss it, I had always had smoke (tablet form) in my train sets as a kid; sort of thought that would be a given in every train by now.
