You might try Backdrop Warehouse - if you can find your way through his web site.

The web site itself is an absolute nightmare, but his products are top-notch.

I second Rich's suggestion. We have about 36' of backdrop from Backdrop Warehouse. Lots to choose from but their website is kind of a PIA!  

You might want to try www.walthers.com and look under HO backgrounds and instant buildings. Often you can use HO items on O gauge layouts. I think Scenic Express caries them also but not sure. Paul Goodness

No question about the need for Backdrop Warehouse to improve that impossible-to-navigate and cluttered website of theirs, but they do have a fine collection of backdrops available.  I plan to use them myself once I get to that point with my layout.  

Actually, I am already past that point because the layout is already up and I really should have installed a backdrop before doing anything else with it.  Bad move on my part because the installation will be a whole lot more difficult now.

After reading your post I did a little research... I've experimented on a limited basis with backgrounds for my own work but have discovered a link (below) that is both informative and entertaining.

Try the card stock modular building drawings from www.westportmodelworks.com

I believe you will have better control of the architecture and size of the buildings for your purposes then a mural backdrop.
