My last project from the stuff I got at York this past April, was to make a couple of burning barrels for the layout.  One will go with some hobos trackside and the other will go outside the engine house.

I picked up some 55 gallon barrels from Scenic Express and the LED fire lights from Evans Design.  These are model U1F.  Size of the LED's are 1.8 mm and will run on 5-19 volts.  It includes a bridge rectifier to run on AC, DC, and DCC.

I put a few holes into the barrels and painted the outside Rustoleum Paprika and the inside flat black.  I also painted the outside of the barrels a little flat black.  I then cut up some balsa wood and painted them black to make the wood that would be sticking out of the barrels.

I drilled a 3/16" hole in the bottom of the barrels to insert the LEDs.  The wood then was glued on top of the LED fire lights.

Here's a couple of pictures showing where the barrels ended up on the layout.

Check out the video below and see the barrels on fire!  The campfires on the second half of the video used the same LED fire light kits as the barrels.  All I did to the Woodland Scenics fake fires was drill a few 1/16" holes into the plastic mold and drilled a 1/4" hole up through the bottom to house the LED's.

Thanks everyone for the comments!  It's a project that doesn't take to much time to complete.

NJCJOE, I thought about it when I was making these.  I might still do it, someday.
