Battery operated Lionel, aka Ready-To-Play

Have become mildly curious regarding Lionel’s battery operated trains. Which has set me to wondering - why did Lionel come up with a new gauge? Why didn’t they go with a battery powered O gauge size? They already had accessories, track, rolling stock, etc. Well I suppose there is cost as the BO are definitely inexpensive compared to current O gauge offerings. Any other thoughts?
