I installed a BCR in a 4v railking engine. It will not start, lights come on no sound. whats wrong?

I’m no expert, but, I don’t think MTH produced a 4v system. Think they came in 5v or 3v flavor. Easiest way to tell is check the shape of the charging port on the undercarriage. Round = 5v, rectangular = 3v. Also, to start off, 30-xxxx railking model number would be good for you to get more comprehensive, helpful answers.

Are you charging the BCR by putting the track up to full voltage for one minute before trying to run the train? That has to be done every time.
What kind of BCR did you use? FWIW, the 5V boards (round charging port) are known to die suddenly for little to no reason.

i do not know what kind of BCR it is i got it at a show yesterday. tried charging it for a minute. reversed polarity now no lights when i power it.

i found the box. It is 30-1212-1 and it is a 8.4 volt.

So your locomotive has the 5-volt Proto-2 system (round charging port, 8.4v battery). The correct BCR for your locomotive looks like a 9V battery similar to the one that was connected to the circuit boards inside your locomotive.
Not sure what you mean by 'reversed polarity, though. The model of transformer you're using would be helpful info.

Its a z-1000 , I turned the connections around on the BCR. I thought I had it reversed.

As a general rule, electronics don't like to be hooked up reversed/backwards.
Not meaning to be an alarmist, and not saying that there is, but you might consider the possibility of circuit board damage.
One way to see that is to get a big magnifying glass and closely inspect both sides of the circuit board. If you find any black/burnt spots or wires that are no longer connected, you will know there is a problem.
Mind you, the board can still be bad even if it looks good. It can get its "brains" scrambled, but still look good.
But if it looks bad, then you know it is bad.
Sometimes the engineer/designer of the circuit board is smart enough to have the electronics protect themselves.
I hope all this makes sense. It's way past my bedtime and my sentence structure is either degrading quickly, or already gone off the rails.
i reversed the wires. I i got the wrong type of BCR at the train show. there are no markings on the BCR. I thought they are all the same voltage.
If you used the BCR2, it probably croaked with the higher voltage from the 5V board set. Try using a plain NiMh rechargeable battery and see if that works.
