Personally I'd just nail it and hide the nail with some additional ground cover.
In my recent attempt to glue indoor outdoor carpet to plywood for my layout, I used glue special for indoor outdoor carpet and the like.
I used several different products, none really worked well and I wound up extremely PO'ed, out a lot of wasted $$$, had to replace my tabletop due to the mess from the glue and more.
I ended up just re-stapling it down. I'd suggest the same.
Staple gun.

I second the suggestions to use mechanical fasteners. If you want to reuse the carpet or wood later on, it's a lot easier than if you applied glue.
Another option is to use two-sided carpet tape, but it doesn't always hold very well.
Just use white glue around the edges with a one inch brush of the mat and put some weight on top while it dries. Give it 24hrs.
Just make sure you lay the mat flat and smooth it out as your laying it.
worked great for me.
Don't use nails or staples.

If you ever have plans to remove the mats - use doubled sided tape. I believe what I used was a wide carpet tape type product.

Exactly what I have used. Double sided carpet tape. Also have used heavy duty Velcro.
