I am restoring an old Lionel 1101 locomotive. I want to improve the appearance of the wheels. I am not sure, but they appear to be sintered powder metal parts. A black oxide coating would give the wheels a nice new appearance. Is this something that I can do at home - or should I send it out to a shop that specializes in industrial coatings? I read that sintered PM parts should be resin-impregnated prior to being coated with black oxide. Has anybody here ever done that?

Mike,

If I recall correctly someone just asked this question within the last two weeks or so and a number of good suggestions were given in response.

You might try entering "black oxide" in the 'exact phrase match' box on the search page to retrieve that thread, and others related to it.

Mike

I found it. Thanks.
