At times, to model blacktop, I have used "3M" stair-tread tape, such as in these rural scenes. It comes in a big roll, cuts easily , applies quickly, and sticks real tight. It's approx. as wide as your hand. I use fine HO or N gauge black ballast/ground-covers to obliterate seams.FrankM. , Layout Refinements
One thing I just used was skateboard grip sheets. Looks like brand new black top and is self adhesive. I am considering painting it a dark gray with brush. Not sure yet. I liked it because it was straight, comes in many widths and thick enough to cover any seams that weren't completely filled. Just another thought. At the end of the day, it was the closest to the look I wanted with a minimum of work.
Depending on how much road you're doing, asphalt roofing paper is perfect for roads. It's black and it's asphalt (kinda like using real dirt for dirt). A big roll is about $35 and is enough for you and several friends to make a lot of roads and parking lots (remember, it's roofing material so you get a ton of it in each roll). Just paint on the striping and you're done. It cuts easily with an X-Acto or utility knife and steel ruler. We bought a roll for the club and still have a bunch of it left for when we make changes in the roads. You should probably double it up for grade crossings for Atlas or Gargraves track, but it's about the right thickness for ScaleTrax and Code 148 2-rail track.

That looks like it works well. Maybe a little weathering to enhance it a bit. I see another use for roofing on structures as well..
Nice tip'..
