I have the Lionel Virginian Allegheny. This was the locomotive that started my great O-Gauge obsession years ago. A couple of years after I bought it I sent it to Train America and they installed an EOB board.
Now it appears that I have one or more boards blown. The train won't respond in conventional or TMCC. So I am trying to figure out what to do next. My local hobby shop doesn't do repairs anymore so that is no longer an option;

1) Send it to someone (help with whoever that would be) and have it repaired.

2)Try to find a used newer Allegheny and switch out the shells. (Are the shells on the MTH and Lionel Allegheny interchangeable?)

3)Send it to Jeff at J.D.S. Productions and have a DCS upgrade.

Anyone have else recommend a different course of action and a suggestion?

1) An item number would be helpful. I'm guessing 6-28028, but it would be good to know for sure.

2) When you say your loco won't respond in conventional or TMCC, specifically what does it do or not do? Be sure to include details about lights, smoke unit and sound system - do these work?

3) Have you tried a program reset of the R2LC board?

TRW

1) Yes it is 6-28028

2)When powered up I can see marker lights, headlight and cab lights. I have sound coming from the tender. Mostly static. The engine does not respond to command and it will not work in conventional (it powers off and on as you try, but no movement). In conventional I can blow the whistle and ring the bell.  Smoke unit is not coming on.

3) The engine does not respond reset commands.

Scott, I have that exact locomotive.  It's a standard Lionel modular TMCC setup, no cruise.  I installed the ERR Cruise Commander M, and of course my Chuff-Generator and Super-Chuffer.  There's nothing that precludes a pretty easy fix for this one, it's all standard Lionel parts, and plenty big enough to work on.

OK, you might have two different problems going on.

1) You could have a bad Lionel R2LC board. Do you have another (or one from a different locomotive) you can try? This plugs into the EOB board. If this doesn't fix things, then the problem is likely with the EOB.

2) With regards to static coming from the tender, this is probably unrelated to your other problem. Unplug and re-seat the modular boards found in the tender. If this doesn't help, pull and re-seat the two RailSounds chips found on the audio board, but ONLY if you have the proper PLCC chip extractor. (It's the same one that comes with MTH Proto-1 reset kits.)

I hope this helps.

Well.... as my brother would suggest....

don't knock it until you've tried it. It relieves a lot of toy train induced stress.

If you wanted, I would lean towards PS3. I know you run both. Either manufacturer's modern boards would be good.

I have a few Alleghenies so I could try a swap for you. I don't have the Lionel yet though. I never would imagine that it's a direct swap/fit.

A simple board install after checking why it failed would be the best. Don't forget about the video!
