A friend and I recently received a generous donation for our collection used at the Redford Theatre for our annual Christmas train and village display.  A patron approached us and happily donated approximately six storage bins full of his and his brother's childhood Postwar Lionel trains and many accessories.  Most were fairly high end items from the time period, many with boxes sporting Madison Hardware labels.  Sadly, many of the train items were showing heavy signs of use and poor storage conditions.  I've been slowly working my way through the collection and have gotten two of the locomotives running.

Lionel 681 Turbine and passenger cars making up the 2150WS set.  This locomotive only required basic servicing and ran great.  The original tender shell is in very rough shape and will need replacing.  My 736W tender for my Berkshire filled in for this video.

A Lionel 6250 Seaboard NW2 which had some pretty bad rust on the bottom side from poor storage conditions and didn't show any signs of life when first tested.  It just required a good cleaning, two new light bulbs and some wire.  After a good lubrication it runs like new.

The third locomotive I just opened up this evening is a 2330 GG1 from 1950.  This one is similar to the NW2 as far as condition, but it's far worse as far as the rust issue and is missing some parts such as a couple screws and the pantographs.  The motors and E unit worked properly when the rollers were bypassed, so it will also be a good runner when finished.

Looks like fun to me.  Others may not agree, however.  But nothing ventured is nothing gained.

Thanks guys!

It's indeed great fun.  Other than a little rust and grime, there's truly nothing wrong with these pieces.  While some would take the easy route and throw them away, I prefer getting them back to what they were built for.  I just rebuilt both motors for the GG1 and they run like new.  The rust is coming off everything else quite nicely.  The paint will never be pristine, but that's how I like them.

In that case they can throw them in my trash can.....LOL

Some more progress after cleaning up the shell.  It's far from pristine, but the lettering and decals show brightly and the paint still has some shine left to it.  The stripes are obviously faded as was the case with most of these.  New pantographs, insulators and a new working horn are on order.  I'll likely be reassembling it tonight with some new wiring.

A volunteer at work gave me a box of Postwar Lionel items in various states of completeness. Everything was filthy from sitting in storage. Most of the pieces are good for parts, but these four cleaned up pretty nicely. I've also got several 2-6-4 chassis, shells and other components and might try to assemble one of those someday. The big pieces are all there, but they're missing most of the hardware and some of the rod linkages.

I can't really travel to help, but if you ever need a fix-it monkey due other matters remember I'm at 94& graph Jake. I'd be honored to help you guys with sprucing any "junkers" for the theater.  Your postings are something I look forward to during every Yuletide season; I owe you

I'll definitely keep you in mind for future projects, thanks!  You're actually very close to where I currently live.

I enjoy sharing what I've been working on, so I'm glad to see you enjoy it.

I have two of the cars (black gondola and operating box car) from a set I received in 1950 as a little boy and I got the same caboose from my brother-in-laws old train set about the same year (we are the same age). These pictures bring back fond memories.

I've got several of the gondolas and cabooses, but they're still fun to tinker with.  Everything from that gift cleaned up nicely.
