I have a Lionel tmcc CN Dash 9 (6-18287) and now when I try to run it in command control, it only runs at full speed. After reading up on the forum, I’m pretty sure it was the flywheel magnet ring that is causing the problem so I took the shell off. This revealed a ring that was split in two (labeled #1) which, I’m assuming, was originally around the motor

My question is: is this the Flywheel Magnet Ring? If so how can I go about fixing it? I’ve read that some people just replaced the entire motor but when I look online for replacement motors I’m not seeing this ring on them. Any help would be appreciated!

@gunrunnerjohn I'm curious about something, and you're one of the best people I can think of to ask...  There are challenges associated with pulling and re-pressing the flywheel.  If he succeeds, Austin will regain his Odyssey 1 function with 32 speed steps.

How feasible is it, and how much would it cost him to forget about the magnet ring and put ERR in his diesel instead?  Even if it costs a little more, he would get improved control with 100 speed steps, and no chance of damaging the motor.  I know some upgrades are basically a drop-in, not sure about this one.  Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

However, pulling the flywheel is the trick, you can't pull it without a puller and expect the motor to survive.  You have to pull the flywheel for the fix-it flywheel as well, and the fix-it flywheel is pretty poorly designed.  The internal shoulder that you'd expect to center the magnet ring is too small, so you have to just glue the ring to the bottom surface of the flywheel.  The stock flywheel that you just pulled can easily be replaced using a drill press or vise to press the flywheel back on after securing the new magnet ring.

This engine would be easy to install the CC-M, but as Pete says, they're currently not in stock.  That is the novice fix for sure, you don't have to mess with pulling the flywheel.
