I will be starting a new layout build soon, and I was thinking of doing it in stages.  One of the issues I will have is time/money.  The entire room needs to be repainted, the doors to the room need to be changed out, I need to add more lighting, and more all before I can even do benchwork.

One way I was thinking of getting over the itch to get stuff done right away is to build a small section of benchwork right away.  Maybe the section where the town is, where I can build that all the way to the finished scenery part, before anything else is done.

Why would I consider this you may ask?  Well one reason is that it could also use this section as a photo module as I build out the rest of the layout.  With completed scenery, a proper backdrop, etc I could photograph trains in that section until the rest of the layout is built.

Any else do anything like this?

That is what I am doing...building the logging branch, on its peninsula first, so I have

something running that I can switch cars with, as progress, slow on the rest due to

kitbashing and building structures and rolling stock, proceeds? overall.  Also, with that

branch running and sceniced, I will actually have something DONE!  And it can actually

be self-contained, except the boxcars of lumber can't move off the branch.

I think that your approach is great for a number of reasons.  One is that it is great to do different things so that you don't get burnt out at any one aspect of the construction process.  And as you pointed out it will be nice to have one section completed so you can take pictures and etc.  But, whatever you do, enjoy the construction process, it's a major part of the fun of this hobby in my opinion.
