Does anybody have experience replacing one of the green classification lights that are mounted in small silver pods on the top of the scale Lionel "J" boiler? The one on the fireman's side is fine as is the headlight. Do you have to remove the chassis from the shell to get to the LED or are they serviceable from the outside? Thanks for any help with this small problem.

You will probably need to remove the shell. Often this is not the bear it seems to be at

first - typically it's 4 screws (see manual or website) - and is usually easier than removing the endlessly-screwed-on-and-tabbed bodies of high-end diesels. You won't have to unplug

all those wires - just lay the shell on its side and fiddle with the class LED, most likely.

I've never opened up this loco, but I've opened several others.

And kudos for referring to it properly as a "classification" light and not a "marker"

light.
