Today to the horror of my three and five year old boys I started to dismantle my layout. I've never like it from the time I built the frame work and finally decided it was time to go. The boys don't like the idea but I promised them we can run trains on the floor until the new framework is up, but it will be a while until any permanent track will be laid.

You can be very creative when it comes to your "Carpet Central". The thing you must remember is to include your two boys. You can make it into a game where they have some input. The three of you can draw out track plans together, remember to keep it simple .
Keep the boys interested and happy, make sure you run some trains during the transition period.
Good luck with your new layout. Always and exciting time.
Best of luck with your new layout. Please keep us posted.
jlm 1973,
Nothing wrong with upgrading your layout, keep the boys interested by having them help with the building of the new layout. Some train running on the carpet sounds great also, as the building takes place.

Trial and error is one of the best ways to learn and running trains on the floor for a while will offer more opportunities for that type of learning experience than having a permanent layout. Sounds like the boys have a pretty good pa to give them all that time to have some creative learning.
