I just spoke to the folks at Charles Ro. They have been told to expect the new Legacy C-Liners at the end of September!

I just hope the FM demonstrators dont come together with the Amtrak heritage set and the F40's!
History question from a 2-railer: What is the heritage of the Lionel C-liner tooling. In particular is the body based on tooling first produced by Rivarossi in O scale back in the early 1970's?
After I converted to O scale from HO in 1971 one of my first kit-bashing efforts was to create a C-liner B unit by cutting up a pair of Rivarossi A's. I tossed the very weak power trains (truck mounted HO sized motors) in favor of an All-Nation C-Liner conversion kit. Twenty years later I replaced the All-Nation drive with a custom one I built using Pittman motors, NWSL flywheels, Car Works sprung brass FM trucks, and Overland gear boxes. Almost 50 years later the C-liners still see service on my layout.

Ed, the tooling Lionel is using is ex-MTH. I don't know anything about MTH's development of the tooling though. I always wanted a set but have given up on converting swinging pilots to fixed ones on carbody diesels.

The Lionel tooling is ex MTH. Theres a youtube demos with Dave video on it. Lionel retooled the drivetrain and internals to work with legacy. The version due in September will be the 4-6 wheel configuration. Lionel mentioned they will do a 4-4 modified tooling in later runs.

I believe this MTH Penn C Liner proto 3 issue was 2015. It’s really quite nice. I hope your expected Lionel/MTH model is as good. This pilot is better than Many MTH Models. It has pretty nice narrow gap. Perhaps only the MTH D&H “Shark” is better. It can Almost pass as a fixed plot model - and it’s a proto 2 vintage model.
Cheers !!! 🙂

Im Excited to see how these C-liner Demo units turn out with the two tone Green!
