I have a question about the differences between the Cab 1 and Cab 1L?

I know the Cab 1 has a crystal to change the frequency  at which is operates (mine is currently 27.255 MHz and a broken antenna that's taped together) and the Cab 1L has 9 pre-programmed frequencies.

So my question is...Can the Cab1 remote work with the Cab 1L base and/or vice versa? Or, is this strictly a one way operation? I'm finding that I limited in my Cab 1 operation, and I'm wanting to move up to a Cab 1L base and remote.  My Cab 1 remote is able to quill the whistle on my recently upgraded SP 4449. Which I know, it's not supposed to do. I believe the button contacts are starting to fail. But it is pretty cool to hear the whistle changing tone.

I know, I can move way up to the Legacy system and eliminate a lot of these questions. But, I can't justify the added expense when I'm only using TMCC (ERR) equipped engines.

What say you all? Thanks

I'll continue to use my CAB-1 Base and Controller until they die, then replace them both with the CAB-1L version. As I understand it, locos equipped with either "plain" TMCC or with LEGACY will respond to either system.  But I haven't tried that yet.  Further, the CAB-1L won't activate some of the "high end" features of LEGACY-equipped locos; however, I don't use those techie features anyway.

Okay, I purchased a Cab-1L system at the train show last weekend. Can I connect both of the "U" terminals on the bases together and then to the track? Trying to run the engine and play station sounds at the same time is a pain. I'd like to use the Cab 1 to run the station sounds car and the Cab 1L for the engine/s. Is this possible? Cause I connected them this way and only the Cab1L works. It seems that its blocking the Cab1 from communicating with the station sound car.

NO, the BASE1 and BASE1L cannot be used in the same setup.  You can connect the BASE1 to a Legacy base, but not the BASE1L.  You NEVER connect more than one track signal to the tracks, that will kill the TMCC signal!

You probably should have spent the extra bucks and purchased the Legacy system. With the proper cable you can still use your TMCC base and Cab 1. You could later purchase just the Cab 1 L remote that will communicate fine with the Legacy base to gain an extra remote.

I would agree with that since Lionel raised the pricing of the CAB1L system the full blown 990 is a better value.
