Since I am having trouble getting my black modules to load I have a question. I have a radio shack usb to serial port cable shouldn't this be finefor legacy as it works just fine with dcs.. chief

they have only officially tested a couple of them, but I haven't heard anyone finding a problem that was traced back to the cable. Yes it should work, but your mileage may vary.
Have you checked to see if there are updated drivers for it?
No chris I have not tried that will check into it thanks
I think the one difference is that the Legacy base requires the handshake lines, so make sure it's a full RS-232 cable.
I had the opposite issue. I have a cable and USB <-> Serial adapter that works fine with the Legacy base, but won't work with either of my Rev. L TIU's. They have USB, so that's how I do the updates.
John the handshake may well be the problem I am having not reall sure, but I ordered the adapter lionel says will work with their stuff so we will see what happens next. sooner or later I will get it to work. chief
The stated reason for no LSU for the Apple MAC was the lack of proper handshake handling, so it stands to reason if the cable isn't a full cable, that may be a problem here.
Appreciate your help should be able to resolve next weekend . chief
I have the Radio Shack cable and have no problems with either. Check your settings and refresh them since the com port settings seem to change when plugging in the cable.
I can get the base connected and everything with the radioshack cable enlighten me on what other settings you are talking about please.

Look for device settings and conflicts in your PC under the devices settings since your are adapting a USB port to an older style RS 232 serial port via hardware and software. Normally under the settings and devices tab and there will be a conflict listed for the device/adaptor cable. You might need to reload the correct device driver for the cable which is why I do not like PCs.
The stated reason for no LSU for the Apple MAC
It's not MAC, it's Mac short for Macintosh, it not an acronym but is a name.
Now if you are talking computers MAC means Media Access Control address (MAC address)
Gosh, sure hate to upset the MAC (or Mac) groupies. Hopefully, the grammar lesson is over and we can get back to the subject.
However you spell and capitalize it, the problem with supporting the LSU on an Apple computer is the lack of handshake.
MAC/Mac ranks right up there with Lash Up. Saying MAC when referring to Mac makes the person look like a Noob
The odd thing I have never quite understood is that I can use Parallels on my Mac to run the LSU using a USB/Comm cable, so it's not hardware but something that is different in the OS's
"so it's not hardware but something that is different in the OS's"
The driver(s) may not be handling all of the pins/protocols. There are actually levels of drivers for USB support particularly on the Windows side. If you start drilling down you can see high, medium, and low level drivers for the "bus" on top of device specific drivers for items plugged into the bus. We have several pieces of "legacy" (nothing to do with Lionel or trains) equipment that has serial ports for control communication. A lot of modern PC's don't have serial ports or the ones they do have are half *'d. The USB serial adapters are SUPPOSED to take care of this but they aren't as equal as their advertising copy makes them out to be.
Chris,
TLAs have been used over and over again for different things. You aPplE lovers need to get real!
We have a class at work where in the book they use the same Acronym for 2 different items on the exact same page. Confusing reading the least.
Updat3e finally have success.
What changed?
Look at problem solved will do some more update tomorrow chief
