Would it be possible to power the loco tmcc unit by battery? Would it require an inverter to flow AC to it or does anyone know where to bypass the converter in the tmcc unit to hook up a 12 volt battery.
If I could do this, then I could eliminate the middle rail and keep the outside rail for the command module. Shouldn't that work?

I believe there was an article in OGR several years ago about running 2 rail O with TMCC. Someone on the forum may be able to direct you to the article.
It should work, but be prepared to spend ~$200 for a small pure sine wave AC inverter in the 40-50 watt range, and be prepared to have lots of battery on board.

The same rules would, and do, apply as for TMCC on 2 rail S.
This is different, though. TMCC "O" equipment seldom if ever has insulated wheelsets.
