Bought several item's at a train show and the dealer through in a Z750 transformer block but no control head. Can you use a Z500 or 750 or 1000 control head or do I have to use the Z750
Thanks, Gary

Gary, I had all three controllers at one time. I opened them up and they all looked EXACTLY the same.
I would think that you could substitute the power inputs for any of of them, as the Z-500 to Z-1000 look like they use the same control unit. Just you will be limited to the number of watts that the power supply has.
Maybe Barry Broskowitz can comment on this, so we know for sure, he is the expert for DCS.

If I remember right, you can use a Z750 or 1000 dial with any of the bricks, but the 500 dial with only the 500 brick due to the lower amp rating.
If you look on the back of the controller you will see that the 500 is rated 4 amps and the 750 (I believe) & 1000 are rated 6 amps.

Thanks for the help

I have 2 - Z750 controllers and both say 4 amp max, I have also used them with a Z1000 brick without troubles.

Yes, but did you draw more than 75 watts for an extended period of time through them? Any of them will work if you don't exceed the ratings of the controller, regardless of the size transformer connected.
John, I was commenting on the fact that it says "4 amp max" on the back and I have no way to check if I was using 750 or more as I have to monitoring equipment to test this. It did work is all I'm saying, the 750 tripped with 2 trains running and didn't with 1000 (2 MTH engines with 11 passenger cars total)
The controller has no way of knowing what transformer block it is using. The circuit breaker is in the transformer block. The overall consensus on this forum is that each controller is the same regardless of label. Some people differ.

Actually, if I recall the previous conversation about this (can't find it right now), the consensus was that the 75 and 100 were identical, but the 50 was different.
