ERR doesn't need a flywheel. Not sure it will help with the abrupt stops. You would need new sound boards too as those won't work in Command.

I have seen TMCC FTs sell for less than what these upgrade kits will cost. You might consider another path.

I have several ERR and no flywheels. They run great. No abrupt stoped unless there is a power outage. You’ll be fine. Leave the motors alone and get the ERR items.

In addition to what the other folks have said, the difference between having and not having flywheels for the China drive trucks when power is removed is almost nonexistent.  It really isn't worth worrying about.  Besides, do you really just slam off the power while stuff is running as a rule?

OK, no flywheels, no problem. So what would be a likely combination of ERR components to go in this engine?

You will want to get the full Cruise Commander. You can either get a Railsounds Commander, I assume EMD F unit, from ERR or replace the audio board with a RS4 generic diesel Railsounds board from Lionel and keep the audio power board. The latter option wil require some investigation on where to connect serial data to the mother board. It may be marked in small letters right on the board. It will be the pin marked "SER". Electro Couplers are optional.

Thank you everybody for your comments. I really like the RailSounds 4.0 board that came with this engine. If I have install different sounds to accommodate command control I'll just keep it conventional.

Well, unless for some reason, the RS4 board that's in there is the command version, you will have to use different sounds.  The conventional chipsets don't respond to the serial data, so the prime mover will be a maximum RPM all the time with a constant 18 volt track power.  Also, you won't have the horn or bell in command mode.

A closeup picture of the two socketed chip labels on the RS board should give us more information.
