I can't seem to get decent smoke (if any) controlling my Legacy 2-8-02231100 Chesapeake and Ohio#701 with TMCC CAB-1, but it works just FINE with my Legacy 990.   Yet, I CAN get decent whistle smoke on my Legacy Camel Back using TMCC and/or Legacy. What am I missing here?

AFAIK it does not matter how you control the locomotive. Whether using Legacy/LCS, TMCC/CAB-1, or conventional, when you blow the whistle, the whistle smoke should activate. That said, if the Whistle smoke is turned off then it will not work obviously.

One thing you can try is repeatedly hitting AUX1, 9 to increase the smoke output. Some models have a low, medium, and high setting for smoke output. On the CAB-1 this is usually cycled by using AUX1, 9 and AUX1, 8.

Typically it's OFF -> L -> M -> H then H -> M -> L -> OFF.

There is no reason both systems should not be able to control smoke the same. Also, whistle steam is on whenever stack steam is on and any whistle signal causes it to blow as long as the switch is on and stack steam is on.

Most likely on TMCC  CAB-1 you are not using the correct sequence to turn on smoke.  Are you pressing aux1 first to ensure the number button are active?

There was a previous discussion where a user could not turn off smoke because they did not understand the 3 level system in recent (notice your engine product number system is 22).

The manual: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...20Legacy%202-8-0.pdf

Again, the new models have 3 settings for smoke so pressing the button (8 or 9) each press cycles it up or down through off, low, med, high. If on high, i takes 3 button presses of 8 o toggle all the way to off.

OK- here's what's going on. I TIMED it- with the setting always on HI either on the CAB-1 or the CAB-2, I have to wait a minimum of 4 minutes to see ANY smoke coming from the steam whistle outlet.  ONCE I WAIT for 4 or 5 minutes, then and ONLY then do I get pretty decent whistle steam smoke, although it appears to be better using the Legacy CAB-2 instead of the older CAB-1, which is still mysterious to me?

The main stack is OK.  It smokes up a STORM. I even measured the track voltage to be sure. It is 18.1 volts, so I can rule that out.  I have nothing else to compare this with, except for my Legacy Camelback, which smokes just FINE after only 1 minute! Everything so far is pointing towards returning/exhange, but I wanted some feedback before I do.

Thanks,

Jim

Actually, that's not true.  Many (most?) locomotives with whistle smoke have a separate switch for the aux smoke.  The vision line products with multiple smoke features typically a switch for each smoke feature.

UPDATE- the Legacy 2-8-0 Chesapeake & Ohio is going back for an exchange.  Having to wait 4 or 5 minutes for a moderate amount of Whistle Steam Smoke can't be normal.

Jpepe3691,

     You maybe putting too much fluid in the whistle, then it begins to work lightly then medium then heavy. The most fluid you should put in the whistle is 10 drops (no more) if the unit was empty give it 10 drops if the smoke looks kike its getting low then add 5 drops. Try adding different amounts until you get it right. You may send your engine on a trip for nothing. Hopefully your using a Cab2 but a Cab1 or Cab1L works just as well as long as the switch is on.

Thanks, John B- I think I was pretty careful adding the Mega Steam. I purchased more of the pipettes that Lionel usually packs with every engine about a year ago, and actually recorded exactly how many drops each line on the pipette represented. I usually start with 10, and after about 10 minutes I might notice it needs maybe another 5 drops. On most of my "smokers" I usually add 5 drops after I run them, and they cool down, and let them soak it up for the next day. The really strange part about this particular engine is the STACK smoke is just FINE- it's the smoke coming out of the Whistle Steam opening.  I'm not sure how the one smoke unit supplies both the main stack and the whistle aperture, but I'm guessing there's a blockage??? That's why, after fooling around with this for countless hours, I'm returning it for another one.  Appreciate the feedback, though.

Thanks again

Jim
