I have been working on a c&o wood caboose kit from quality craft.  I am ready to start the brake system on the bottom.  I only plan to mount the major brake system parts and not detail all the rods and etc..  The directions on the kit look wrong where they show the  air tank and triple valve buried where one of the trucks should be present.   I have been looking through some internet images, I can see several similar cabooses 70s and 80s showing the air tank in the center on the smoke stack side.  I wanted this caboose to be from the 30’s/40’s where there looks to be an actual tool box on the bottom Of caboose under the cupola where the tank is shown in the more modern cabooses.  Any help on on diagrams or image references would be appreciated.

Thanks

I added the tool boxes, both sides, which required repositioning the brake detail.  I don't think Mullet River is still in business. Brake detail parts were from another parts supplier.

There is a lot of the AB Brake Kit #409002 that has not been installed, including the brake cylinder. Much is to be fabricated from small wire, the majority of the brake kit.  There is a diagram with the Brake kit.   I also have C&O decals that came with the kits, I'm modeling a Montour Cab.  Mike CT.

Looking through a reference book I have for these cabooses - they were built in the mid-1920's. As delivered they had toolboxes mounted underneath, but looks like by the late 30's most of the toolboxes have been removed and replaced with hangers for rerail frogs.

Try looking at the C&OHS archives and try searching for wood caboose or wooden caboose.

This should bring up a lot of pictures however I doubt if there will be any of the underside.

I have Rich Yoder's brass version of these cabooses and the underside detail is great. I will try to post a picture later today.

Thanks Ken and Mike,

Last night I noticed on the only picture I have with tool boxes from the late 20s shows very different end railings where they don’t go up to the roof.  I like the railings going to the roof.  I will plan to go with out the tool boxes and match Rich Yoder model’s appliance arrangements.  I really appreciate your help!

Ken,

I had not planned on adding the rerailers and their racks, but they Look really cool.  Do you know of a source for the re railers?

Thanks

Mike
