Color is what tinplate is all about!
Nobody Did colors like IVES in the occupation years. In fact the 1929 catalog states that they had a department of color specialists. One thing they did use a lot of was Black!!! These trains are unique and IMHO extremely appealing!
Here is a 1928 Black 3243R which would have come with a Black Diamond Express Sr., Interstate-Limited, or orange 187 188 189 cars! In the background you can also see a trio of black and red Cardinal Special 3242 locos and a Cardinal observation car.
A black and Cardinal Red 3255R from the 1929 Red Hawk Special or Commerce Freight sets.
A Black and orange 3236 circa 1929. This engine was also made in 1930 but had a gloss black cab. This one is flat.
