I got one over the summer NIB.  Smoke was anemic as well.  I opened the smoke unit and removed the sleeve over the resistor.  I replaced the wicking with the rope style from Lionel.  I positioned the resistor to fit nicely into the wicking.  Make sure you do not block the air hole.   Smokes a lot better now.  The puff is a bit weak as it more bubbles out of the stack but you can clearly see all the smoke now.

I bought the 726 CC Berkshire new. I remember the smoke output was weak. I did a simple rewiring and now puts out very decent puffs of smoke. I think it was the power wire to the smoke unit is too low voltage. I ran a wire direct from the pick up rollers to the smoke unit to get it to work right,I am pretty sure.

I happen to love the way the Postwar 726 berk puffs smoke:

Are we talking about the same engine here..."Postwar" and "Century Club"?

Mark in Oregon

I believe the Century Club would have more modern features and probably be a better runner than the original Postwar of the early 1950s, which has a charm of it's own, is very sound mechanically if in good operating order, and is probably more of a collectible.
