Looking in Barry's book, and the MTH manual, I didn't see the "Engine Error" message explained.  Could someone point me to the page?

I was trying to retrieve an engine from the Inactive list, on the same track upon which it had been added to TIU 1, and kept getting the sequence "Check Track" followed by "Engine Error".  With Engine Error on the screen the remote would hang and have to be powered off and back on to get out of it.

I tried deleting the engine, then adding it back, and same thing happened.

Moved it to another track on the same TIU, other fixed channel, and it added the engine.

I'd like to understand what's going on with the "Engine Error" message, and this sequence.  I cleaned the offending track, etc.  Another engine on the same track came out of the Inactive list fine.

On DCS 4.2

Puzzled.

There wasn't a lash up, I don't have one in the remote.

The other engine was a separate locomotive, which was found and moved to the active list.  The rogue one was inactive but would not select or move out of the list to an active state.

I finally took it off that track and put it on a different track after deleting it from the remote and then it added after failing to add as a "new" locomotive.

You certainly didn't look very hard. It's in the 2nd edition's Table of Contents as a sub-section on page 149:

Engine Error

Although this error message is not very common, there is one circumstance in which it will appear every time the operator attempts to add a PS2 engine to a DCS Remote that has DCS 4.1 loaded into it. This is due to a bug in DCS 4.1and 4.2 that will not allow a PS2 engine to be added to a DCS Remote if the PS2 engine that the operator is attempting to add has the same DCS ID# as does a lashup that is already in the DCS Remote.

The workaround is to use the Edit Address function to change the lashup's DCS ID# to something else, allowing the new PS2 engine to be added. If necessary, once the new PS2 engine has been added, its DCS ID# can be changed and the lashup's DCS ID# can be changed back to what it was previously. Refer to Part II - DCS Is An Operating System for Your Trains!, 5. DCS Menus, System Menu, Engine Setup for additional information regarding the Edit Address menu function.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

I have the 1st edition, which doesn't appear to have that on page 149.
Anyway, I've no lashups in the remote.  And no other engines with that ID.  The engine did add once I deleted it from the remote and moved it to another track on the same TIU.
The signal strength on the track on which it could not be found is a consistant 9 according to another engine now on that track.
Just for that locomotive it went through the sequence "Check Track" "Engine Error" lockup up remote.  Same for a different remote.  Maybe the battery on the engine was low, even though the INFO said it was Okay?

I've the electronic copy, John; but as said, it's Edition 1. Was told the updated edition was mostly about PS3, which I don't have, but apparently there was more added, like the explanation of Engine Error ...

That explains a lot!

The 2nd edition has 25% more information than does the 1st edition. It went from 168 pages to 215.

In that case I'll have to consider investing in a new version ;-)
Are you planning to do another update to cover DCS 4.31 when it's released?
