Just purchased a few Lionel Locos for Christmas.  One is a Lionel FA-2 ABA setup with the B unit being the “Superbass”.  I love this setup and plan to buy the other B unit from MrMuffins trains when I can afford it.  However, when running all three units I get a very loud quickly repeating high pitched chirping sound from the speakers when the horn transitions in sound.  This occurs regardless of sound level.  It happens twice in the attached video.  Is this normal?

A few details:

1) sound level is set at half in the video.  It does seem to get worse if I turn it up, but the sound is present regardless.

2) the current power setup is a GW-180 currently delivering 17.5v at this point on the track (checked with multimeter)

3) the chirp is present with AA, but really noticeable with ABA setup.

4) the chirp is present with or without smoke units operating

5) operating using LionChief app in Bluetooth since I do not have 1.5k to buy a used 990.  The three engines do not always connect as a unit which can only be solved by cutting power, waiting a minute, then restarting.

thank you for your time and advice!!!

You have it turned up max volume- gee, you think maybe  something metal vibrating on the train from that level of volume hitting a resonant sound?

has nothing to do with controls or buying a 990 set.

Thanks for the reply!  this is at half volume as mentioned in the post, the phone is just close to the locomotive.  I was thinking the same thing regarding resonant frequency.  I have tried putting my fingers on metal parts and the loco to absorb this, but to no success. it seems to be coming from the speaker but don’t want to take apart the loco without getting thoughts.

Sorry, this right here just is my frustration with Modern recent (last 2-3 years) Lionel. The brag is- buy big L because of great support and warranty. Meanwhile, back in reality- yeah, probably going to need to use that "great support" and warranty.

Again, imagine selling an engine to a customer at a local shop. Next day the customer shows up angry about sounds, or screws falling out, or bad smoke fan, and sure even if your shop can repair it- you shouldn't because any and all warranty work has to go back to Concord.

How meany threads in just the last couple of hours today here in this forum are about a big L product- that likely should be going back to Concord one of a dozen common reasons...

Its the metal side venting vibrating,  its very loose and vibrates. I have the NYC fa's. Try lowering horn volume In app, every new Lionel diesel is so loud it vibrates the shell and causes unwanted sounds, I lower the prime mover sound also.

Thanks.  While I had tried quieting rattles in various places I went back to try this again.   I may open them up to see if ai can find a solution using foam tape, etc.  Will post if I identify an easy fix.

Happy New Year!

I can't hear it either.

Interesting…it is super loud to me and my son (could be the speakers we listen with as the pitch is very high).

regardless, after a long time messing around with it, this is what I found.

I tried holding all of the different pieces while the horn sounds. I finally got my son to help and if we hold the functional doors in as the train horn blows the sound almost entirely disappears.  Curious, but this suggests a resonance/rattle issue as suggested by Vernon and Tom.  I might try to take off the shell of the Superbass unit and see if I can quiet it down somehow.  If I’m successful I’ll post a video.

Thanks all!

might have to tape the doors shut from inside or like you suggested already, use foam tape.

I imagine the superbass unit should make it worse! Even though it's a shrill, higher pitched sound.

I have some brass tenders for steam engines that do this when sound is added to a unit that didn't have sound. some have a piece of rubber as a lining.
